Nicki Minaj's Mom Singing Gospel Is a Good Thing

by Kenya Foy

While Nicki Minaj poses half-naked on Instagram, stirs up controversy over an album cover and makes headlines for celebrity feuds, who knew Nicki Minaj's mom is preparing to release a gospel song?! GASP! My initial reaction to this news was, say whaaa?!? There's no way in heck this is a good decision. But after careful consideration, I actually think it could work. I realize there are levels to this thing... in other words, pros and cons, most of which I managed to successfully work through once I realized that Minaj isn't the only member of her family who deserves to have a "Moment 4 Life." Here's why Nicki Minaj's mom singing gospel music could actually work:

JUST BECAUSE IT'S MINAJ'S MOM DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE TWIN SOULS, MUSICAL OR OTHERWISE

For example, while I'm prone to having a potty mouth and shamelessly embarking upon my fair share of curse-filled rants, my uber conservative mom cringes at watching movies with too many cuss words and is one of the few people I know who wouldn't be pissed to find out they accidentally bought the censored version of an album. Point being, my mom and I are obviously not one in the same despite sharing DNA and we manage just fine. If we can co-exist in expletive-filled, mother-daughter harmony, this is indeed solid proof that Minaj can remain peacefully perched atop the rap/pop charts even with her mother's burgeoning gospel career.

IT ADDS BALANCE TO MINAJ'S BOLD, BRASH AND SOMETIMES RAUNCHY IMAGE

Even though it's her mother, I can't help but feel like her decision to sing gospel adds another dimension to her daughter, letting us see that there's more to the "Beez in the Trap" rapper than her than craftily coiffed wigs, brow-raising outfits and Instagram photos of her bulging backside, an attribute that arguably attracts about as much attention as her music.

MINAJ KNOWS THE ROPES OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

She's a platinum-selling artist with a mass following. She's internationally known for her controversy-filled stint on season 12 of American Idol and having a line of perfumes and lipsticks. In 2010, Minaj became the first female solo artist to have seven singles simultaneously charting on the Billboard Hot 100. Having this sort of connection could make a musical star out of anyone. Initially, I thought that Minaj's image may get in the way of helping promote her mom's career just because gospel and Minaj's music don't exactly have much in common, but considering her musical knowledge and the fact that it's her mom, I'm sure Minaj would hunt down anyone who tried to stand in her mother's way.

IT MIGHT TAKE THE EDGE OFF THE AGGRESSION OF MINAJ'S BARBZ

Perhaps, this gospel song will help some of Minaj's more-than-dedicated followers relax a little and tap into their spiritual side. After all, they have been known to electronically annihilate anyone who even appears to be a threat to Her Minajesty.

Below is a 30-second preview of Carol Maraj's gospel single, "God's Been Good." It's uptempo and incorporates the use of autotune, showing us that the outrageous apple that is Minaj doesn't fall far from the tree of feistiness. Even though I'm off the fence about whether this is a good or bad move, if Mama Minaj drops a video, I still don't expect Nicki to make any cameo appearances.
