Cersei Has Many ‘Game Of Thrones' Enemies

by Caroline Gerdes

When playing the Game Of Thrones, players enter understanding that losing results in death. And, as we have seen time and time again, no character is safe from George R.R. Martin’s (and the HBO showrunners’ David Benioff and D. B. Weiss) sword. Spoilers Ahead! While many fans are still reeling from Maergary’s death in the Season 6 finale, there is another queen’s fate to analyze. What will become of the newly crowned queen seated upon the Iron Throne? Who will kill Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones?

Let’s face it, Cersei’s claim to the Iron Throne is flimsy at best — demented, at worst. We know she isn’t going to win this thing. At the conclusion of the season, it is clear that Cersei is in a garde, if chess is your thing. She is in immediate danger of losing her crown and losing her life. Her demise was prophesied, after all. If you watch the show or read the books, you are aware of Cersei’s paranoia surrounding fortune teller Maggy the Frog’s prophecy — which we saw in a flashback from Cersei’s childhood. Maggy tells Cersei that she will marry the king and be queen “for a time.” She then goes on to predict Cersei’s Achilles heel: “Until there comes another, younger and more beautiful, to cast you down and take all that you hold dear.”

So, with Maggy’s prophecy in mind, who is going to take out the queen? Here is a list of the characters that are most likely to be the fall of Cersei Lannister.

Daenerys Targaryen

Cersei believed Margaery was the young queen who would be her demise, so she neutralized this threat in the finale episode. But, what Cersei does not know is that a young, more foreboding queen is heading straight for King’s Landing: Daenerys Targaryen. Don’t get too comfortable on that Iron Throne, Cersei.

The actress who played Margaery, Natalie Dormer, also weighed in on her character’s death, and may have given a hint as to Dany’s role in Westeros. When explaining why it was the right moment for Margaery to die, Dormer told Entertainment Weekly, “They have to tighten the storylines given however many episodes are left. They have to focus them, down to get to the real business of the throne. Dany’s not far away.” Dany’s not far away, huh? Dormer could be hinting that Dany was the real young queen/threat for Margaery to focus on …

Arya Stark

She is making a list and checking it twice. And, by checking it twice, I mean muttering it to herself like a crazy person for the past six seasons. Arya has already started to cross names off this high stakes naughty list. She notably crossed Walder Frey off the list in the finale episode when she served him his sons for dinner and slit his throat before dessert. Damn. Could Cersei be next?

Tyrion Lannister

So, Maggy actually forecast more than just a young queen. She told Cersei, “And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.” Valonqar is actually Valyrian for little brother. Tyrion is Cersei’s little brother, who already killed her father and who has been open about his disdain for his sister. After all, Tyrion did threaten Cersei, “I will hurt you for this. A day will come when you think you are safe and happy, and your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth. And you will know the debt is paid.” But, Cersei has more than one younger brother, Jaime is her twin but he is Cersei’s junior by a few minutes.

Jaime Lannister

Jaime Lannister is many things to Cersei: Her twin brother, her lover, and possibly her murderer? Could her death be at his hand? And, I do mean hand singularly. TV Guide pointed out that when Jaime lost his hand, it was the beginning of the wedge between the twins. So, if Jaime did strangle her with one hand, it would be significant. But why would Jaime kill Cersei? Some have predicted that the two will grow so distant that Jaime will kill Cersei. (Jaime has killed the ruler seated on the Iron Throne before.) And, others have predicted a murder-suicide. They came into this world together, and, fittingly, they could leave it together.

Herself

This wouldn’t be the first time that she sat on the Iron Throne with a vial of poison…
