Trump's Vice Presidential Pick Is Pence —REPORT

by Emily Shire

Update: On Friday via one simple tweet, Donald Trump confirmed Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is his Vice Presidential running mate.

Earlier: According to Reuters reporting from Roll Call, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has picked Mike Pence as his running mate. According to Roll Call, which broke the news Thursday, Trump has picked the Indiana governor as his vice president, even though Trump isn't set to make the formal announcement until Friday in New York. The New York Times reported shortly thereafter that Trump's campaign has "signaled strongly to Republicans in Washington" that Pence is his running mate pick. However, the New York Times also noted in its report that "Republicans caution the party’s mercurial presidential candidate may still backtrack on his apparent choice."

Trump's campaign has not confirmed that Pence will be the presumptive Republican nominee's running mate and has, in fact, stressed that a final decision about vice presidential choices has not yet been made. Trump senior communications adviser Jason Miller tweeted on Thursday, "A decision has not been made by Mr. Trump. He will be making a decision in the future…" and that Trump "will be announcing his Vice Presidential pick tomorrow at 11am as planned." Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort also tweeted, "VP selection, a decision will be made in the near future and the announcement will be tomorrow at 11am in New York."

Pence was widely reported as one of Trump's top picks for the vice presidential shortlist, especially after Trump and his family met with him at the governor's mansion in Indiana this week. However, former House sPeaker Newt Gingrich was considered a likely pick, too, as was New Jersey governor — and former Trump presidential rival — Chris Christie.
