Gwyneth & Chris Have Some Sad News

by Courtney Lindley

The conscious uncoupling between Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin has concluded. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Paltrow and Martin have finalized their divorce after 13 years of marriage. The couple cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split, and, thankfully, they appear to have ended things amicably — a judgment signed by a Los Angeles judge on Thursday stated that neither Paltrow or Martin will pay spousal support.

Though it's taken some time for things to become final, the news should come as no surprise to their fans and those who have been following the pair's relationship. In March 2014, Paltrow announced that the two would be undergoing a process that she called "conscious uncoupling" on her lifestyle website, Goop. The announcement drew unwarranted attention for the term, and like many a thing Paltrow does, sort of caught on as a term for break-ups. Since then, it seems that the two have remained friends and are trying to remain in good standing with each other for their two children, Apple and Moses (now 10 and 12, respectively). Below, a timeline of everything Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin — leading to now.

The Early Days:

Fall 2002: The two meet backstage after a Coldplay concert.

December 5, 2003: Gwyneth and Chris marry at the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. Afterwards, the pair honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

May 14, 2004: Paltrow gives birth to their daughter, Apple Blythe Alison Martin, in London. Of course, the unusual baby name stirs up some feelings from the masses.

April 8, 2006: Paltrow gives birth to the couple's son, Moses Bruce Anthony Martin.

During The Marriage:

February 2009: In an interview with Elle UK, Paltrow discusses keeping her marriage low-key in the public eye. "It doesn't behoove us to be a public couple." She says of her husband, too: "He certainly doesn't want to be that. We've never ever walked down a red carpet together, we never will."

May 2013: Paltrow discusses her marriage again with Glamour UK, this time opening up about the difficulties she and Martin face. "It's hard being married," she admits. "You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We’re the same as any couple."

The Separation:

March 25, 2014: Paltrow announces her separation from Martin on Goop. She writes the following message:

It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.

October 2014: Martin and Jennifer Lawrence are seen out together. Rumors begin to surface that the two are an item, but they never confirm.

August 2015: Martin is spotted with actress Annabelle Wallis.

September 2015: After rumors that the two have been dating for almost two years, Brad Falchuk posts a photo of himself and Paltrow on Instagram:

November 2015: Paltrow discusses her marriage. According to People, Paltrow was honest when an audience member at a Q&A asked what in her life didn't turn out the way she planned: "My marriage," Paltrow replied. "I am from a tribe of people who stay married. My parents stayed married until my dad died. I really don't come from a culture of divorce at all, and I had very high hopes for what my life could be."

June 2016: Paltrow attends Martin's Coldplay show in Cannes, prompting Martin to ask the crowd, “Is there anyone in the room that used to be married to me?

July 2016: Paltrow and Martin's divorce is finalized.

It's been a long road for the Oscar-winning actress and Coldplay frontman, but here's to hoping they're happy and committed to co-parenting their two children as amicably as they have been since their separation. Wishing them the best.
