'Zootopia' Told In Emoji Is Incredible

by S. Atkinson

Zootopia is the best. It is. Superlatives are par for the course for the compelling animated feature, with Rotten Tomatoes awarding the bunny-fox caper an impressive 98% approval rating. So how could this feast for the eyes be improved? Like the rest of your life: with emojis. The Zootopia World Emoji Day video is wonderful, though, warning, it does retell the plot of the film, so if you haven't had a chance to reawaken your passion for Disney this year and you're averse to spoilers, it might be worth holding off until you've seen it.

The movie focuses on a land in which there are no humans, only animals and prey and hunter alike peacefully co-exist. Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) is the first police bunny but she's having trouble being taken seriously, with her boss assigning her to parking ticket duty — until she teams up with a reluctant-to-help fox (Jason Bateman) who does cons on the side. The beauty of the movie is its political themes, which it handles with an appealingly light touch. For example, Hopps finds her job thanks to Mayor Lionheart's inclusiveness initiative in the run up to his re-election. All these themes aren't covered in the quick emoji version, but you can also use it as a taster to whet your appetite:

This isn't the first time Disney has done an emoji rundown. The studio are pros at turning their greatest hits into emoji mini-movies (and we can only assume they have an office rammed full of feverishly texting millennial interns) and this is just the latest: Aladdin , The Force Awakens and Finding Nemo are also available in emoji form.

Which begs the question, how long will it be until Disney starts skipping making the actual feature and just cuts straight to the two minute emoji version? With retells this good, I hope the answer is "soon."
