Nickelodeon's New Show Is A Historical Victory

by Jordana Lipsitz

Sometimes, children's cartoons are just as fun for adults as they are for the audience they are geared for. Nickelodeon's new cartoon, The Loud House, seems like it may follow that same adult-and-child-communal-experience. But the show's universal entertainment factor isn't nearly the coolest thing about it. In fact, Variety reports that T he Loud House will featured a married same-sex couple, which would make it the first Nickelodeon show to do so in history. Of course, the universal applicability of the show should come as no surprise, because it is created and executive produced by Chris Savino — a guy who's worked on all sorts of children shows that also happen to be for adults, like The Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack.

The Loud House, which debuted May 2, centers around Lincoln Loud and his family of 10 sisters (Lori, Leni, Luna, Luan, Lynn, Lucy, Lola, Lana, Lisa, and Lily) as he attempts to survive the chaos of a huge and well, loud, 13-member family. The episode in question, "Overnight Success," premieres Wednesday, July 20 at 5 p.m. and will introduce the parents of Lincoln's best friend, Clyde McBride, as the boys embark on their first sleepover.

The best thing about this totally normal couple is just that — they are totally normal. The show makes no big deal about Clyde's family being any different than Lincoln's. The gag of the scene shown above is that Clyde's parents are a little neurotic about making sure their son prepared for his night, which, if anything, is a stereotype of an only child, not one with two parents of the same gender.

OK, so I Iied, there is one even better hing about this couple. The parents are voiced by none other than talented comedians Wayne Brady and Michael McDonald. The show could not have picked better actors to portray this mixed race, same-sex couple.

I don't know about you guys, but it looks like I'm going to try to pick up some baby-sitting gigs so I can have an excuse to get a glimpse of this interesting new show. The Loud House, here we come.
