Harley Quinn's Trailer Song Is Your New Obsession

by Michelle Lulic

Harley Quinn is one of the many highly-anticipated characters hitting the big screen this summer with the premiere of DC Entertainment's latest superhero (or supervillain) film, Suicide Squad. Thanks to the release of Harley Quinn's Suicide Squad character trailer, she's proving that she not only knows how to kick some serious butt, but that she doesn't need a man to do so. And yes, that includes Harley's on-screen love interest, the Joker. Breakout artist, Grace's, new single "You Don't Own Me," featuring G-Eazy, is the song in the trailer, and the song perfectly describes Harley's determination to stand on her own and do what she wants. It is, therefore, the perfect independent, bad girl anthem for the Harley Quinns of the world.

With lyrics as blatant as, "She's that baddest I would love to flaunt," and "Don't tell me what to do. And don't tell me what to say," even the most casual fan of the upcoming film immediately understands what kind of woman we're dealing with. Seriously, don't let those pigtails fool you. However, "You Don't Own Me" is not only serving as Harley Quinn's introduction, but also as a breakout introduction for the Australian-born singer, Grace Sewell — best known by her first name, Grace. Considering that both Grace and the actress behind Quinn, Margot Robbie, are from Australia, that only makes this song choice even better.

But if "You Don't Own Me" does sound a bit familiar, it's because the song is itself is actually not completely original. In fact, Grace's latest version of the song — that was produced by Quincy Jones — is actually a remake of the 1963 Lesley Gore song of the same name. Seriously, how amazing is it that a song this bold and female empowerment heavy was written in the '60s? Lesley Gore didn't shy away from the lyrics, "I'm young and I love to be young. And I'm free and I love to be free. To live my life the way I want. To say and do whatever I please," either.

Fans can get Grace's version of the song on the Suicide Squad soundtrack in stores now. Suicide Squad officially hits theaters on August 5.
