The 'Cursed Child' Cast On Dealing With Spoilers

Secrets, secrets, are no fun, unless you tell ... literally no one. The cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child talked about keeping secrets about the plot not just from fans, but pretty much everyone they knew, which apparently led to some ~Harry~ situations. (Sorry.) Now that the script version of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set to hit bookshelves on July 31, the cast will soon be able to talk about their roles at length — but for now, we can take a trip with them down awkward secret-keeping memory lane.

If you're impressed by how airtight the spoilers for this play have been so far, you maybe shouldn't be. J.K. Rowling sent a plea to fans on Twitter to "Keep The Secrets," and nobody does it better than she does — Queen Rowling's security measures preventing spoilers from the last few Harry Potter books from leaking were the stuff of legends. Similarly, very few audience members from the last few weeks of Cursed Child preview shows have given many plot details away, so most readers will be going into the next Potter installment as blissfully unaware as they were nine years ago at the release of the final book.

So how did the cast cope with landing roles in one of the most iconic shows of our generation, and not being able to say a darn word about it? Here's what they had to say about it.

Esther Smith

The 29-year-old British actress said friends were constantly badgering her once they found out she was cast in the show: "Well you're not Hermione, and you're not a student, so what are you?" Her role has not yet been formally revealed to audiences, so stay tuned! (Or, if you're feeling frisky, go Google the show reviews — spoilers at your own risk, but they all say great things about Smith.)

Anthony Boyle (Scorpius Malfoy)

"I had to tell everyone that I was playing a different role, and made up that I was playing a young Irish boxer called McGinty," Boyle recalls with a smile. It was revealed several weeks ago that Boyle plays Scorpius Malfoy, son of the infamous Draco Malfoy — and judging by the looks of the cast photos, he's having a rough go of it!

Cherrelle Skeete (Rose Granger-Weasley)

"Yeah, it was a relief when it came out and you could say, yeah, I'm in this show," says Skeete, who will play Rose Granger-Weasley, the daughter of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The cast photos of the Granger-Weasley family, by the way, are the most precious thing on this internet, so get pumped for the inevitable sass of Rose, guys. GET PUMPED.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate those SICK harnesses? Our faves are going to be flying!! Fingers crossed for more Quidditch matches and sneaking out of Hogwarts on broomsticks, because like mother/father, like daughter/son. (Moment of silence for poor Professor McGonagall for dealing with three generations of this nonsense.)
