The Real Reason Rihanna was In Her Video

Shakira's boyfriend Gerard Pique has a lot to say about Shakira's career and unfortunately she's listening. The singer told Billboard that Shakira's boyfriend won't let her do music videos with men anymore, which may be why Rihanna landed the position in Shakira's raunchy "Can't Remember to Forget You" video. "Since he no longer lets me do videos with men, well, I have to do them with women," Shakira said. "He's very territorial."

But apparently Pique is only territorial about men. It seems he's more than happy to watch his girlfriend get stroked by another woman. While I have a lot of reservations about this attitude, Shakira made sure she pointed out that she doesn't mind.

"It's more than implied in our relationship that I can't do videos like I used to. It's out of the question, which I like, by the way," she says. "I like that he protects his turf and he values me, in a way that the only person that he would ever let graze my thigh would be Rihanna."

But whether Shakira's cool with it or not, it's a little voyeuristic to only want to see your girlfriend with yourself or another woman.

And beyond all that, for her boyfriend to be "more than implying" (what does that even mean?) things about her music career seems in poor taste. Shakira got to where she is today because she worked hard for it and made her own decisions. But now her career is essentially controlled by the man she's dating, and a man with no expertise in music to boot.

Yes, being in a video with a guy vs. with a girl probably doesn't make or break your career, but when you start letting other people control aspects of your work, it's a slippery slope to having no say about anything at all.

Check out vintage Shakira dancing with (horror of horrors) a man.
