Can This Adult VR Experience Teach Us About Sex?

Virtual Sexology is here. If you don't know what that means, don't worry — I didn't learn until today either. But basically, the lovely folks at BaDoink VR, the virtuality reality adult entertainment company, are now creating content that helps viewers increase sexual pleasure and learn about sex and masturbation. That's right: we're talking about porn as a form of sex ed.

"Utilizing VR technology and teledildonic connectivity, this cutting edge VR experience features never-before-used technology for sex education and therapy to help enhance sexual pleasure and performance — both solo and with partners," BaDoink said in a press release. "Users will learn unique, proven methods to improve their abilities in the bedroom while instilling relaxation, control, and confidence... BaDoinkVR worked closely with Marriage and Family Therapist Hernando Chaves, MFT, DHS, to develop the content and the variety of exercises that are featured in Virtual Sexology."

I love the idea — because it's something that's never been tried before. It's one of those things that seems so out there it just might work. And BaDoink VR have decided to just go for it. "I wouldn’t say pornographers are best-suited for educating the adult public on sexual pleasure. We're not educators. We’re entertainers, after all. However, nobody’s doing it — and I don’t know who would — so we decided to throw our hat in the ring," Badoink CEO Todd Glider tells Bustle. "We wanted accuracy, so we brought a sex therapist on board and began working to produce a program aimed at helping adults everywhere become better, more attentive lovers — in a world where, at the most fundamental level, there is a dearth of sex education. What we do have going for us is a willingness to show sex in all its glory; we do so with eyes open, without shame. So perhaps that does make us best-suited after all."

You can l earn more about with this video, which is SFW if your work is cool with a woman in her underwear playing with her boobs. Here's a sneak preview:

See that face? That's the face of learning. It looks like the face of porn, but it's definitely the face of learning.

I know it sounds pretty counterintuitive, using porn as a way to teach sex. I mean, normally we think of how unrealistic mainstream porn is. But they could be on to something. Especially with immersive aspects like virtual reality and tools like the Kiiroo Onyx male masturbator — it's basically as close to hands on education as you can get. So it's best to think of it not in terms of linking porn and real sex, but just taking porn and using it to educate.

"There are a growing number of adult-oriented sites out there devoted to real sex, focused on highlighting the chemistry, the passion inherent in the love act when it occurs between two loving partners," Glider tells Bustle. "Virtual Sexology does not bridge the gap between real sex and porn sex, it uses porn sex to make real sex more enjoyable for both men and women."

People are so embarrassed to talk about sex— especially sexual anxiety or sexual dysfunction— that any opportunity to get help with enough privacy that they feel comfortable is a win in my book. And it's so crazy it just might work.
