When Are Snapchat Mini TV Shows Coming?

by Megan Grant

Snapchat Memories was pretty cool, but with Instagram right on its heels, the disappearing-content social media app has to stay on the cutting edge. I guess the only logical next step is to break into the television industry, and that's exactly what Snapchat is doing — with mini TV shows. If you're wondering when Snapchat mini TV shows are coming, I have good news for you: You don't have to wait long.

Snapchat has previously partnered with NBCUniversal (notably bringing Olympics highlights to Snapchat), but their relationship is officially expanding with a new initiative that will kick off on Aug. 22. First up will be The Voice on Snapchat, a five-part series that will allow users to submit videos clips to be judged by the likes of Adam Levine and Miley Cyrus. One lucky winner will have the chance to appear on the reality show's next season.

After The Voice on Snapchat comes The Rundown, an E! News creation, which airs Sept. 8. This news show is actually making it debut on Snapchat and will only be available to watch on the app. That's right, folks: Snapchat isn't just taking old TV clips and throwing them up on the app. It's making the whole thing a unique experience for its loyal users.

Ron Lamprecht, Executive VP of Business Development and Digital Distribution for NBCUniversal, explained, "This is going to be more of an original show production," adding, "The idea that you’re going to take a horizontal piece of content, even if it’s great, and just crop it vertically isn’t going to work."

Other shows are jumping on the bandwagon, including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live, and it likely won't end there. This development offers immense opportunity for greater entertainment for Snapchat users, who already have a hard time disconnecting from the app. The possibilities really are endless. Stay tuned, Snapchatters!

Your move, Instagram.
