11 Labor Day Weekend Trip Ideas

by Dacy Knight

Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. Once it comes and goes, we must bid adieu to bikinis and beach days, sadly say "sayonara" to summer Fridays, and come to terms with there being fewer rooftop parties and backyard barbecues to crash. With all these heartfelt goodbyes, it's only appropriate that we commemorate the occasion by partaking in something extremely worthwhile and fun — like a Labor Day weekend trip — to "go out with a bang" as we reluctantly accept the end of summer.

There's no question why a weekend getaway is a popular go-to for graciously making the most of summer's last real breaths of freedom. With the long holiday weekend ahead, you'll be able to plan a mini-vacation that attempts to pack in all the things still left over on your summer bucket list. Finally get behind the wheel to take that road trip and check off all the vineyards, breweries, food trucks, or historical sites you wanted to see. Take out your tents and hiking gear for one last hurrah in the great outdoors without the necessity of a zero degree sleeping bag. Get out of the country for a short but sweet trip across the border or at a beach resort boasting a price tag well within your budget. Scroll on for a little inspiration for spending your last handful of days in the carefree summer sun. Whatever your calling is this Labor Day weekend, get to planning now to ensure you see summer off right.

1. Get Some Sun On One Last Beach Retreat

Enjoy one last weekend sporting your swimsuit and thick layers of sunscreen before the weather cools and we take out our sweaters. You may be hitting the beach again in the upcoming months, but it will be more slow-stroll-as-the-wind-hits-your-cardigan than sunbathing-session-in-the-sand.

2. Explore Local Vineyards

Head out to wine country and partake in some tastings of local selections. If you're in the New York region, Long Island boasts a string of lovely local vineyards. If you live in California, your destination is a no-brainer, but even West Coast dwellers of the north can enjoy the offerings of the Columbia Valley.

3. Go Camping

Get in one last weekend in the great outdoors before you're confined back to your work desk sans summer Fridays. Grab your gear and a cooler full of goodies, and take in all the natural beauty that lies just a drive away. Some national parks close for the fall and winter, so summer may be your last chance to enjoy them until next year.

4. Take A Food And Brew Tour

Satisfy your summer appetite with a weekend exploration of notable nearby eats and breweries. You can map out your trip by destinations to get your foodie fix, and maybe even stumble upon more delights along the way.

5. Enjoy A Coastal Getaway

Cruise to the coast for some seaside time as you bid adieu to summer. Indulge in fresh catches of seafood washed down by a summertime ale. Get out on the water with a boat ride or some leisurely time out on the dock.

6. Get Lost In The Big City

Venture out to a new city for some weekend exploring. Take in the city's restaurants, local attractions, and nightlife. Three days is the perfect amount of time to have a full trip brimming with adventure and develop a new appreciation for a nearby metropolis.

7. Take In Some History

Use your long weekend to get a little more education on American history by taking in some historic sites in the area. With a little research, you might be surprised by what's around in such close proximity to you.

8. Score An Off-Season Resort Deal

Do a little research for flight deals now that summer's winding down. Chances are you'll be able to find some budget-friendly options for one last weekend getaway.

9. Go International

Get out of the country for the weekend for some international fun. If you live in the far north or deep south, you can cross the border without too much of a journey. Buses and flight deals are available from the New York City area to Montreal and Toronto, and if you're on the other side of the country, a relatively short car ride can get you from Seattle to Vancouver. If you're in the south, consider a quick getaway to Mexico for some last fun in the sun before summer's end.

10. Take In The Countryside

Beat the city heat for the fresh air of the countryside. Find a scenic route that takes you out of the city and past the suburbs for some serious downtime without any distractions. We often make trips out into the country in the fall for harvest festivals and pumpkin picking, but try taking in the rural beauty in its lush green state.

11. Vacation In Your Own Town

Who says you have to get out of town to have an adventure? Keep things close to home this Labor Day weekend and commit to a staycation to see your usual stomping grounds with new eyes. Take on the sites as a tourist. Hit up the hot spots you usually forgo because the line is too long. Explore parts of your city you haven't had the time to see, and try new activities that get you out of your comfort zone.
