Is Cara Delevingne Really the Next Kate Moss?

by Mary Avant

The style set and fashion fans alike — us included — got a real kick out of Karl Lagerfeld the other day when he compared model-of-the-moment and current muse Cara Delevingne to the queen of all supermodels, Kate Moss, saying that fans’ admiration of Delevingne borders on the obsession that they used to (and often still do) have for Moss. And while there’s no denying that Delevingne is everywhere these days — from the fashion month runways to a TV screen near you — we found it hard to believe that Delevingne may someday be mentioned in the same breath as a supermodel great like Moss.

But then something happened to make us really reconsider that position: Moss and Delevingne teamed up with British luxury brand Burberry to laud the label’s new fragrance, set to hit shelves this fall. The big news was released Wednesday morning on Burberry’s Instagram account, along with a selfie of the two Brit beauties, who were shot for the campaign by famed fashion photographer Mario Testino.

With Delevigne and Moss side by side in matching Burberry trench coats, bedhead blonde hair, and nearly bare faces, it’s hard to deny that these gorgeous models — with their notably similar bone structure and nearly identical golden strands — look noticeably alike.

But the similarities don’t end with their British background, blonde locks, and enviable bone structure. In fact, when we stop to think about it, there are quite a few similarities between the English models, their successful careers, and their noteworthy accomplishments along the way.

Like Moss was back in her ’90s-era catwalk hay-day, Delevingne has become the model to hire for runway shows, whether they’re in New York and London or Milan and Paris. This past fashion week alone, Delevingne strutted her stuff in shows as wide-ranging as Chanel, Stella McCartney, Fendi, Burberry, and Giles, just to name a few — much like the days when Moss would walk for designers such as Louis Vuitton, Versace, Chanel, Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, Prada, and many, many more.

Each model has also become the face of a bevy of London fashion brands, from Burberry and Mulberry for Delevingne to Rimmel, Burberry, Alexander McQueen, and more for Moss. They’ve also tried their hands at fashion design, with Delevingne recently introducing her very first handbags for Mulberry and Moss developing a line for British retailer Topshop.

Coming in at just 5’7”, the models are also a little on the short side for a career in runway modeling, but they make up for it with their dynamic presence and ability to make ladies want every piece of clothing they wear, both on the runway and with their rocker-chic styles in everyday life.

And have you seen pictures of Moss as a young model? With her sun-kissed skin and beachy blonde locks tucked behind her ear, she could practically be modern-day Delevingne’s long-lost sister!

And though it has nothing to do with their professional careers as models, each beauty also has a reputation for being a little wild and crazy in her personal life, with Moss becoming famous for her out-of-control partying and alleged drug use. Though there’s no evidence that Delevingne has taken this same path, she’s done nothing to hide her penchant for partying with celebrities and causing drunken scenes at professional basketball games.

While it isn’t safe to definitively say Delevingne is set to replace Moss as the supermodel to watch and obsess over — after all, she’s only 21, and a lot can happen over the course of a model’s career — we can at least entertain the idea that the younger British beauty could one day take her rightful place in the fashion model hall of fame alongside (but never in place of) Miss Moss.
