No, Lochte Is Not At The Closing Ceremony

The 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro have come to an end, and that means our favorite athletes are done competing. I laughed, I cried, and I cheered when the Final Five took gold and when Michael Phelps stood on his last ever Olympic medal podium. The 2016 games have been nothing short of exciting, and that includes the closing ceremony. Seeing athletes appear this event is always a good time, but this year one notable athlete is, unsurprisingly, missing. Ryan Lochte is not at the Rio closing ceremony.

As you've likely heard if you've been following the Olympics at all, Lochte returned to the U.S. earlier this week after controversy surround his claim that he was robbed at gunpoint in Brazil along with some of his teammates. On Thursday, a Brazilian police official claimed that Lochte was not robbed at gunpoint, but instead involved in an incident at a gas station. Lochte has since issued an apology "for not being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics."

As for his performance during the games, Lochte became the second-most decorated male olympic swimmer in history — second, of course, to Michael Phelps. Lochte has 12 Olympic medals in total: six gold, three silver, and two bronze. In these 2016 games, he managed to secure one gold in the 4x200 men's freestyle relay along with teammates Phelps, Conor Dwyer, and Townley Haas. He came in fifth in the 200m individual medley — the first time he has not medaled in that event.
