Britain's House of Lords Passes Same-Sex Marriage

Today in happy marriage equality news: Britain is all but certainly set to legalize same-sex marriage. On Monday, its marriage equality bill passed through the House of Lords—to the satisfaction of proponents who wore pink carnations in support, and cheers from campaigners outside Parliament.

The bill now returns to the House of Commons, where it is expected to easily pass. The House of Commons earlier passed the bill 390 to 148.

Right now, same-sex couples in Britain can enter civil partnerships, which involve similar rights and responsibilities to marriage. Now, same-sex couples would be able to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies in both England and Wales.

The Church of England remains divided on the issue and will still be barred from offering same-sex ceremonies.
