The 8 Weirdest Reasons Movies Are Rated-R

Remember when Agent Phil Coulson tragically died in the Avengers (only to conveniently be brought back to life later for the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D)? Well his untimely demise almost cost that Marvel movie an R-rating. Why? Because in the original cut, Tom Hiddleston's Loki was a bit too aggressive. "Whenever you impale somebody from their back and the blade comes out their chest, there are issues," Kevin Feige, president of production at Marvel Studios said of the problematic scene. The death was re-cut so you couldn't see the blade piece through Coulson in the end, and Avengers got the PG-13 they were looking for.

Sometimes it seems like movie ratings can be a bit arbitrary. Remember when Ryan Gosling's Blue Valentine almost got slapped with the NC-17 rating because he goes down on Michelle Williams? (How dare movies show women being pleasured too??)

Over the years movies have gotten the R-rating for some pretty wacky things.

1. ANY MOVIE WITH MORE THAN ONE F-WORD

It's kind of interesting to watch a PG-13 movie and see where they'll use the one F-word they're allowed. Any more than that and they get an R upgrade. So when they bust it out, you know they really mean it. Whole teams of people spent time just on deciding where to place the curse word to have maximum effect.

2. FIGHT CLUB

Beyond the ordinary violence, this movie got slapped with the R rating for showing "extreme anti-social behavior."

3. MOTHER'S BOYS

This movie got this rating because of the mother’s sociopathic behavior. Ah, then Lifetime definitely shouldn't have been allowed to show Flowers in the Attic.

4. GHOST IN THE MACHINE

Rated R for high-tech horror violence. If you go low-budget and low-tech you're good. But once you start paying people to animate some high-tech horror you're not suitable for children to view.

5. ALIEN 3

It landed this rating for having monster violence. Monsters are scary.

6. DEMOLITION MAN

Sylvester Stallone's film pulled this rating for having non-stop action violence. Nowadays that would be a praise-filled sentence, but in 1993 when this came out we needed our action violence to have some breaks in between.

7. LADY DRAGON 2

Rated R for plentiful martial arts violence. Like action violence, if a movie has too much martial arts into the R category it goes.

8. THE DENTIST

Rated R because dentists are effing terrifying.
