Huma Abedin’s Statement About Her Separation

by Emily Shire

On Monday, following a report in The New York Post that her husband was once again linked to sexting another woman, Huma Abedin announced that she's separating from Anthony Weiner. A longtime aide to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Abedin has been in the spotlight during the election, especially as she was involved in some of the more controversial emails with the Clinton Foundation and allegations of State Department "pay for play." The news of Weiner being embroiled in another alleged sexting scandal comes after another such scandal led to his resignation from Congress in 2011, and another which dashed his hopes to become the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City in 2013. Abedin's statement on the decision to separate reads:

After long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, I have made the decision to separate from my husband. Anthony and I remain devoted to doing what is best for our son, who is the light of our life. During this difficult time, I ask for respect for our privacy.

Weiner did not confirm the allegations, telling The New York Post that he and the woman in question "have been friends for some time," and that she "has asked me not to comment except to say that our conversations were private, often included pictures of her nieces and nephews and my son and were always appropriate."

Ever since Weiner's first brush with sexting infamy in 2011, there was some speculation about whether Abedin would leave the disgraced former congressman. Shortly after that story broke, Abedin announced that she was pregnant with the couple's now-four-year-old son, Jordan. Abedin played a major role in Weiner's attempt to rebuild his political career, and she famously appeared by his side at the press conference in 2013 during which he confirmed the new reports of sexting which brought down his chance at a political comeback. She said, “I love him. I have forgiven him. I believe in him. And, as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward."
