We Loved Some Embarrassing '90s Beauty Looks

by Rosie Narasaki

The '90s have been coming back in for a while now — everything from matte brown lips to slinky slip dresses are completely trendy again. Still though, some things are best left behind — after all, there were a ton of embarrassing beauty looks we loved in the '90s. I mean, I'm glad fun things like grungy plaid skirts and floral minidresses have been successfully resurrected, but some things — like, say, bandanas in every color of the rainbow, and visible lip liner — should just keep on resting in peace.

There are some regrettable trends that we'll probably always regard with a certain fondness — even though things like butterfly clips were admittedly a bad idea all around, most of us will still always harbor a soft spot for them. The same goes for nostalgia-laden accessories like scrunchies and giant velvet hats. Still though, there are just some '90s trends that have no place either among the nostalgic, or among the waves of '90s redux — they should just stay back in the '90s where they belong. So, with all that in mind, let's take a quick look at some of the worst popular hair and beauty looks from back in the day — and do our best to keep them safely in the decade where they belong.

1. The Pale Blue Eyeshadow

Yeah. Not the best look in retrospective.

2. Super Obvious Highlights

Ginger Spice had some great hair moments — but even the best of us stumble sometimes.

3. Skinny Eyebrows

Thank goodness to Cara Delevingne and all the other celebrities who bolstered the bold brows trend. Skinny eyebrows were kind of tragic.

4. Bandanas

What. Was up. With Bandanas? Personally, I had five that I wore in rotation.

5. Shaggy Pixies

Look, I love You've Got Mail as much as the next person, but I think we can all agree that this wasn't exactly the best haircut. Same goes for the iconic Rachel (even Jennifer Aniston hated it).

6. The Over-Powdering

A matte complexion can be great, but too often in the '90s, we took things a bridge too far.

7. Crimped Hair

As bafflingly trendy as this once was, crimped hair actually might be coming back — just ask Ariana Grande.

8. Frosted Lipstick

Why did we ever think frosted lipstick was a good look? In moderation, a little frost can add a nice sheen, but those pale-pale, frosty-frosty looks we so favored in the '90s just weren't good.

9. Harshly-Lined Lips

Lip liner is coming back, thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner — but hopefully, super obviously-lined lips will stay back in the '90s.

10. The Weird Spiky Updos

What was up with all the spiky up 'dos back in the day?
