Kevin Spacey Builds His House of Tweets

by Sarah Freymiller

Kevin Spacey currently has 3.25 million followers on Twitter. And that's about to change. In a move worthy of Frank Underwood, Spacey jumped in for some quick quasi-political commentary on Twitter yesterday. The actor heard that Doug Ford (brother of the infamous crack-smoking Rob Ford) was upset they didn't get a picture together on the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live . His response? Tweet a picture of the Fords with his Oscar photo bombing face sandwiched between their shoulders. He accompanied this with the caption, "When did Mayor Ford start doing what people tell him to do? All you had to do was ask, guys. Here’s your pic."

Truly, this was a brilliant moment in the political world of Twitter. People will fall over themselves to retweet a witty riposte, or, in the case of the famous Oscars tweet, any photo that contains a celebrity. This tweet had both. The backstory? Doug Ford appeared on Ford Nation, saying "We were told you can’t take a picture, and you can’t speak to [Spacey]. Who does this character think he is?!” Clearly, Spacey's response proclaims him as the new lord and master of Twitter. Bow down, Katy Perry. The twitter universe is witnessing the launch of the Space ship.

Not only is Spacey, despite what his name suggests, incredibly sharp, he is also self-aware. He tweeted the website that a fan created in response to Doug Ford's rant, in which he is pictured taking photos with "common folk."

In addition, Spacey has his own 30-second Bunny life reenactment, which may be the first of its kind. Katherine Hepburn and Bill Clinton guest star. The film can be found on his website, where it stands as a monument to his filmography, humility, and continuing cultural significance. He did his own Bunny voices, for crying out loud. I haven't thought about Angry Alien Productions since late in 2010, and now Spacey has kindly brought their work back into the limelight. Perhaps he's grooming them for his replacement as Whip.

As if his pop culture interactions weren't enough, Spacey has also been spreading his spider-like influence in the world of sports. Here is a tweet of him playing tennis with Stanislas Wawrinka against Will Ferrell and Novac Djokovic. For charity. This means, politically speaking, that he now owns Ferrell, Djokovic, and the Australian Open, at least until Wawrinka is bested.

Finally, because it bears repeating, there's this photo. It demonstrates that, at the end of the day, Spacey is the man behind the scenes. He will find that doorway and put his foot in it, although in this case he found a window and put his face in it. It takes talent, a wry sense of humor, and a keen political mind.

Clearly, he was emulating this noble feline.

Like a cat, Spacey is a nimble creature who can jump between worlds. He might even be wrapping his lithe body around your ankles right now. So when Perry realizes, one year from now, just who usurped her Twitter followers, don't say you didn't see it coming. That being said, I will be taking a hiatus from both political writing and T riding until this has come to pass. I know too much about Spacey's Twitter takeover, and I, unfortunately, do not have nine lives.
