There Are Now Karl Lagerfeld Emojis

by Tori Telfer

Do you suffer from a serious lack of fingerless glove emoticons when you text? Do you often find yourself wavering at the end of a digital sentence, thinking, "What this sentiment needs is an icon of an eccentric high fashion designer…in profile"? Do you follow Choupette on Twitter, and wish she played more of a role in your everyday life? You're in luck, you spoiled darling. The world's weirdest designer — Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel's white-haired enfant terrible — has just released his most thrilling product yet: emotiKarl.

The premise is simple: download emotiKarl, compose a text in the app, fill it with as many emoticons of smiling Choupettes and bored Karls as you want, save the text as an image, then send the image as a text. "Wait, sounds a little stressful and involved, and I have so many emojis on my keyboard already…" Your lack of dedication to Chanel is disturbing.

Who knows why Lagerfeld felt the need to expand his empire into the world of emojis, but it appears to be linked to the upcoming launch of Karl Parfums. (The perfume emoji is branded with Karl's name; no Chanel No. 5 here.)

This isn't the first time the designer has shown interest in low-crow, pop-infused consumer culture. The Fall 2014 RTW Chanel show took place in an imaginary supermarket, where everything from the sodas to the whiskey bottles was branded in Chanel. He's also no stranger to replicating himself in miniature: at the Fall 2014 RTW Fendi show, Cara Delevingne strode down the runway carrying the tiny, furry head of Lagerfeld himself.

After all, this is the man who once said, "I am like a caricature of myself, and I like that. It is like a mask. And for me the Carnival of Venice lasts all year long."
