Bridget Makes A Tough Choice In 'BJB'

by Rachel Simon

As someone who, like many others, quickly grew tired of the "being a single woman is the worst thing that can happen!" message seemingly shared in the first two Bridget Jones movies, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the newest film in the franchise, Bridget Jones' Baby, steers totally clear of any of that shaming. The movie features an empowered, happily single Bridget whose actions and desires aren't dependent on whether or not she has a man in her life, and it's truly great to see the character portrayed so well on-screen. That said, being thrilled by Bridget's independence doesn't mean I still wasn't dying to know who Bridget chooses in Bridget Jones' Baby . Faced with two potential loves, Mark and Jack, our beloved heroine has a tough decision to make in the new film, and for fans who've been invested in her life for 15 years, now, finding out which guy Bridget Jones picks is of the utmost importance.

Having seen the film, I can tell you the answer — but beware, major movie spoilers ahead. OK, all good? Then let's get to it. After many drama-filled events and a lot of back and forth, Bridget eventually ends up with.. Mark Darcy, played, of course, by Colin Firth. This should make many fans extremely happy, as Mark has been viewed as the love of Bridget's life, her one true soulmate. And according to the film's end, that's exactly the case, as a sweet photo taken one year after the events of the film's conclusion shows Mark and Bridget happily together, raising their toddler son.

So how did the duo get there? Well, it's not so simple. The events of Bridget Jones' Baby see both Mark and Jack (Patrick Dempsey) vying for Bridget's love after they both learn that one of them is the father of Bridget's unborn child. Both men have deep feelings for Bridget and want the baby to be theirs, yet Bridget struggles with her own emotions. She has always loved Mark, but their former relationship broke up over his workaholic nature. Meanwhile, she's romancing Jack, a kind, adoring (and very rich) man she met at a music festival, but she doesn't know if her feelings for him are as strong as his for her. So for much of the movie, Bridget truly isn't sure what man, if either of them, she belongs with.

Yet by the end of the film, Bridget realizes that her feelings for Jack just aren't strong, and that her feelings for Mark still are, despite their rocky history. She and Mark decide to get back together and raise a family, and, a year after their son's birth, get married. Jack, meanwhile, stays a big part of the couple's lives (which is understandable considering how involved he was with Bridget's pregnancy), and is shown to be close with Bridget and Mark's young son.

Mr. Darcy fans should be thrilled by the conclusion of Bridget Jones' Baby, happy in their knowledge that Bridget has ended up with the man we all knew she always belonged with.
