Emma Watson's New Book Club Pick Is A Must-Read

With July and August now firmly behind us, another title has emerged for members of Emma Watson's feminist book club, Our Shared Shelf, to read. Emma Watson's new book club pick, Half the Sky, is a look at women's rights worldwide. Our Shared Shelf members will read the non-fiction title in September and October 2016.

Written by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn and first published in 2009, Half the Sky has since spawned a documentary and two casual video games. The global movement focuses on "turning oppression into opportunity for women" by improving girls' education and economic standings, and by ending child marriage, forced prostitution, maternal death, gender-based violence, and sex trafficking.

Half the Sky is the second bi-monthly pick for Emma Watson's feminist book club. For the first half of the year, Our Shared Shelf read one new book each month. The schedule slowed down in July and August, when members read Carrie Brownstein's alt-rock memoir, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl, and it looks like Watson plans to keep it that way. Choosing a book every other month makes it easier for readers with smaller book budgets to join in on the fun, so I'm all for the bimonthly book club structure.

Read Half the Sky with Our Shared Shelf in September and October, and share your thoughts with the rest of Emma Watson's feminist book club on Goodreads.
