Why You Won't Find Miley On Any More Red Carpets

When it comes to social issues, Miley Cyrus isn't one to keep quiet. She's spoken out against Donald Trump, adamantly supported Bernie Sanders, and stood up for gay rights, as well as animal rights. On top of that, she started the Happy Hippie Foundation to support homeless and LGBTQ youth. More than just a singer-slash-actor, she's become a full-fledged activist. In the latest issue of Elle, Cyrus announced she isn't walking any more red carpets. This definitely sounds like the next logical step in her aforementioned career shift. She told the magazine,

“[A year ago] I had to do the [A Very Murray Christmas] premiere, and I will never do a red carpet again. Why, when people are starving, am I on a carpet that’s red? Because I’m 'important'? Because I’m 'famous'? That’s not how I roll. It’s like a skit — it’s like Zoolander.”

She's basically prioritizing her conscience over some of the more seemingly superficial aspects of fame. That's an applaudable move, especially since she has a major platform to do so. Granted, I don't necessarily think walking red carpets and supporting the homeless are mutual exclusive events; celebs can still take part in typical Hollywood activities, while using that very spotlight to bolster causes they care about. But I do respect Cyrus for deciding to stand for something more and use her time in other ways.

In addition to future red carpets, there's another place you won't find the singer — Snapchat. Unlike her fellow celebs, she just doesn't get the app. She told Elle,

"No. I want to be. I don’t know how to use it. I feel like I’ll be an old lady that’s too held back, because I don’t keep up with it."

She may sound old-fashioned with a quote like that, but she's certainly entitled to her opinion. Plus, the 23-year-old has plenty of other ways to reach her fans, like her music or her Instagram account. In fact, it's often on Instagram that Cyrus speaks out about social change.

If you're questioning this anti-red carpet decision, you probably shouldn't. To quote the singer herself, she's "just being Miley." She's never been one to follow the crowd, so why start now?
