Lady Gaga Wouldn't Use Music To Hurt Taylor Kinney

by Jordana Lipsitz

When Lady Gaga dropped a single for the first time in three years, it was — needless to say — pretty exciting. And Lady Gaga's fist-pumping breakup ballad, "Perfect Illusion" totally does its best to get the funk on, classic Monster-style. We hadn't heard musically from the artist since her solo album Artpop, unless you count Tony Bennett duets (which I do), so Gaga back in the song-writing business is the best of news. But, in slightly less exciting and more drama-heavy news, the nature of the song has fans convinced that "Perfect Illusion" is a revenge track against Taylor Kinney, Lady Gaga's ex-fiancé.

According to Billboard, Lady Gaga is heartily opposed to the idea that the song is about the actor with whom she shared a five year-relationship. In an interview with Sirius radio host, Andy Cohen she said, "I love Taylor so, so much and this song is not a hit out against Taylor... I would never use my song or want to use the public to hurt anyone that I love so much." The song is not specific to her experience, but many people's experiences in life, according to the singer. "This song is just about... I'm sure not only feelings that I've had but that he's had, that my friends have had, my sister has in her relationship... it's a record about all of us."

The song means a lot more to Gaga than just a revenge track anyway. Billboard reports she told another Sirius host, Sway Calloway, about a vision she has of a "typical middle American girl" who stands all the way in the back on the lawn watching a Gaga show "just crying her eyes out singing along to every word and going, 'I can't believe that I can relate to Lady Gaga.'" "Perfect Illusion" and the whole unnamed album seem like a deep dive into Gaga's soul, not the person she portrays in the media, but the real Stefani Germanotta. This real Germanotta deals with the same sort of feelings the rest of us do.

It's good to know that Lady Gaga wouldn't bash someone she loves still in public. She always feels like a role model, but her commitment to making sure everyone knows "Perfect Illusion" isn't about her ex, is some serious adulting. You go Gaga!
