Check Out These Comedies After 'Fleabag' Season 1

by Molly Freeman

Although Amazon's original series have had an uphill battle against shows from other streaming services Netflix and Hulu, the company has made a name for itself with the award-winning Transparent. Now, one of the latest additions to Amazon's original series library is Fleabag, a British comedy created by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge. So, if you've already gotten addicted to this criminally short series (six episodes is never enough!) then you may be wondering whether Fleabag return for Season 2. Well, neither Amazon nor BBC Three — the network on which the show originally aired in the UK — have announced plans for a second season.

But, the Fleabag TV series is based on Waller-Bridge's play of the same name that debuted at the 2013 Edinburgh festival, according to The Guardian. Since the show is based on a limited work (there are no sequel plays in development as far as I can tell), that could mean Fleabag doesn't return for another season. However, since Fleabag follows the trials and tribulations of life for a modern woman in London, there could be plenty of potential for more seasons. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait and see.

However, since there's no telling how long fans of Fleabag will have to wait for a second season, if it's renewed at all, I've put together a list of other streaming comedies to tide you over in the meantime.

Red Oaks

Part coming of age comedy, part '80s homage, fellow Amazon comedy Red Oaks follows a college student who works as a tennis instructor at a suburban New Jersey country club during the summer of 1985. If you enjoyed the raunchy humor of Fleabag, you may want to check out Red Oaks; the first season is available on Amazon.

Master of None

Another series about a twenty-something character trying to make their way in the world is Aziz Ansari's Master of None. The show quickly became a hit with critics and viewers last fall, and has since earned a Season 2 renewal. Check out Season 1 on Netflix.

Difficult People

This Hulu original follows two comedians — played by creator Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner of Billy on the Street — as they try to make a living doing what they love, and struggle to get along with everyone else besides each other. If that sounds interesting to you (or if you've seen every episode of Billy on the Street and want more of Eichner yelling at people), the first two seasons of Difficult People are on Hulu.

Grace and Frankie

Although Grace and Frankie doesn't star a group of young adults attempting to make their way in the world, this Netflix original comedy does capture the same kind of spirit following two women who become friends after their husbands leave them to pursue a relationship of their own. So, if that piques your interest, the first two seasons of Grace and Frankie are available on Netflix.

Casual

Following recently divorced mother Valerie who lives with her brother Alex and daughter Laura, Casual deals with the troubles of dating and casual sex. If you enjoyed Fleabag, you may enjoy Casual as well and if you want to check it out, the show's first two seasons are on Hulu.

As for Fleabag, it remains to be seen whether the Amazon comedy will get a second season. But, there are plenty of other comedies about sex and dating and figuring life out in the sea of television.
