What Does David Schwimmer's Wife Zoë Buckman Do?

by Amy Mackelden

It's unsurprising that David Schwimmer has scored himself an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Robert Kardashian in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. The actor completely transformed himself for his performance as the Kardashian patriarch, and didn't resemble Ross Geller in the slightest. The series has been such a hit that Schwimmer's main competition in the Supporting Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie category at the Emmys 2016 comes from his co-stars Sterling K. Brown and John Travolta. The Friends actor is definitely in with a good chance of winning, and it's likely that David Schwimmer's date to the Emmys will be his wife, Zoë Buckman. What does David Schwimmer's wife do? The British artist is incredibly talented in her field.

Schwimmer met Buckman in 2007, and the pair live New York's East Village with their daughter, Cleo. According to her website, Buckman "is a multi-disciplinary artist working in sculpture, photography, embroidery and installation," and her work sounds bold and boundary-pushing. she says that she's particularly interested in "feminism, mortality, equality, and life," and this is especially evident in her work Present Life which she exhibited in New York in 2015. It's not unusual to hear of celebrities eating their placentas, or wanting to preserve them, which is why Buckman's exhibit is so timely. Following the birth of her daughter, the artist decided to turn her placenta into a sculpture via plastination. While this sounds more than a little gross, it's an idea that stands out.

Plastination is the scientific process of preserving bodies, by replacing tissues and fat with silicone and resins. While the results are often used for educational purposes, to help us understand the human body better, the models are also often exhibited as art. Buckman's work explores the ways in which science and art intersect, and she clearly isn't afraid to use her own body in her work.

Her work is also influenced by her love of music, and this was especially evident in a recent commission she worked on for Flaunt Magazine. Focusing on the embroidery aspect of her practice, Buckman created a neck tie with the words "Now that I’m sober, you ain’t that fine.” The more I read about Schwimmer's wife, the more I fall in love with her. According to Flaunt, her exhibition Every Curve featured "pieces of vintage lingerie with lyrics from old school hip-hop songs hand-embroidered on them," which sounds like something I would purchase immediately if it was available.

Schwimmer might be the star of the show at the 2016 Emmys, but his wife Buckman is an absolute queen that we're going to be hearing a lot more about in the future.
