Britney & Justin Have Collaborated Before

by Amy Mackelden

'90s kids are finding it hard to contain their excitement right now. Justin Timberlake wants to collaborate with Britney Spears, apparently, after she more or less extended an invitation to him to do so. Back in August, Spears revealed that Timberlake was on the list of artists she'd like to collaborate with (she actually said "Justin Timberlake is very good" — be still my beating heart!). E! News decided to ask Timberlake whether he'd like to work with his ex, and the singer said, "Absolutely, absolutely... I'm accessible, give us a call!" Obviously, this has to happen immediately. Even if the two will never be romantically linked again, it's beyond exciting to think that they might work on new music together. Especially since Spears and Timberlake have collaborated before, and it was beyond awesome.

Timberlake worked on the pop star's self-titled third album, which was released way back in 2001. At the time, the pair were dating, and, in an interview with MTV in Aug. 2001, Spears said of the collaboration, "I thought that it was awkward at first, because I was nervous recording with him doing my vocals... But then I just totally forgot that he was my boyfriend." The result of them working together is the song "What It's Like To Be Me," which Timberlake not only co-wrote and co-produced, but also provides backing vocals on.

It's often forgotten that the pair worked together on "What It's Like To Be Me." It's such an apt track for the pair to have recorded, as the lyrics seem to be about Spears asserting what she's looking for in a relationship. Timberlake's vocals, which are sometimes spoken, compliment the song so well, and it's a perfect example of why the two performers need to work together again immediately. Listening to it will make you wish that there was a music video for the song and that it had been released as a single.

Fans of the artists, who both appeared on The Mickey Mouse Club, don't need any convincing that Spears and Timberlake should be working on more music together. Over the 15 years since they recorded "What It's Like To Be Me," both singers have explored a variety of musical styles. Most recently, though, with Timberlake's single "Can't Stop The Feeling!," and Spears' album Glory, they've both shown a real return to their pop roots. They're much closer to the styles captured in their collaboration on "What It's Like To Be Me" than they've ever been.

Needless to say, the 2001 collaboration between these two pop legends is beyond magical. It's time to start getting excited, because all of our dreams of a reconciliation between the singers could be about to come true.
