'Rogue One' Is Not Your Typical 'Star Wars' Film

by Michelle Lulic

The Force is strong with Star Wars fans, as we're all awaiting the release of the first official Star Wars spin-off film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story . But, while wearing your Darth Vader costume in anticipation of the film may bring back all of those childhood feels, don't expect that just because Rogue One is set in the past, it's going to be Episode IV-and-a-half. Instead, according to actor Riz Ahmed's latest interview with The Wrap, expect a totally new vibe from the galaxy far, far away: As Ahmed told the publication, Rogue One has a very different feel to it compared to the original Star Wars films. In fact, Lucasfilm could be on the brink of releasing it's edgiest and darkest film yet.

“The film is about complex characters and loyalties and murky pasts,” Ahmed spilled. "[It's] a little edgier, with people making these huge compromises. History isn’t always clear.” In other words, there's a whole new feel to this story, which is about a band of intergalactic thieves setting out to steal Vader's plans for the Death Star. Considering Ahmed is playing cargo pilot Bodhi Rock in the film, he's got to have a pretty good idea about where Rogue One is headed — even if it leaves audiences second guessing which characters they can trust from the very beginning.

And Ahmed isn't the only cast member who has made a point to emphasize just how different Rogue One may be from Star Wars: Episode I through Episode VII. In fact, the film's star Felicity Jones told We Got This Covered that "the way it [Rogue One] is shot is very unique," and, "it has a very realistic approach" in terms of cinematography.

It sounds like Lucasfilm is heading in a different direction now that so many new, never-before-seen characters are being introduced — and they're keeping it all under wraps. So, if we want to find out about Jyn Erso's possible relation to the Force, we're just going to have to wait until the film is released and see it all at once. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters Dec. 16.
