There are many big prizes to take home at the Emmy Awards, but Best Comedy is a pretty huge honor — after all, the show that wins is essentially named the best (and funniest) series on TV. On Sunday night, the statue went to the reigning champ: Veep won Best Comedy Series at the 2016 Emmys, confirming that the HBO comedy series is a must-watch. The show's cast and producers accepted the award on-stage at the ceremony, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David presented it to them with a hilarious intro.
Executive producer Dave Mandel accepted the Emmy on behalf of the show, thanking cast and crew, family, his influences (which included Jerry Seinfeld and David). In a funny moment, he searched his pocket for his speech, but pulled out his parking ticket instead. "I get to work with this amazing cast and writers, but this show is so good," Mendel said during the speech. "It should be an easy job, because I get to work with Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes it so easy."
Louis-Dreyfus also took home her fifth Emmy in a row for Best Actress in a Comedy for her starring role in the political series. This year's race for the Best Comedy Series statue was a tough one — the six shows in contention were all critically-acclaimed and totally hilarious shows, all of which have a lot of heart. Veep was the winner in 2015, and Modern Family has taken home statue five times throughout its run. Newcomers to the nomination field were Aziz Ansari's Netflix darling Master of None and the Anthony Anderson sitcom black-ish on ABC. Repeat nominees Transparent and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt rounded out the competitive field for this year's top comedy award.
