The 2016 Emmys Opener Was Amazing

I usually have high hopes for the opening sequences of award shows, but they don’t always deliver. But when Jimmy Kimmel was named host of the 2016 Emmy Awards, I was happy. He has his own late-night talk show, so you know he has experience with almost-live television and a staff full of amazing writers. Kimmel’s opening sequence for the 2016 Emmy Awards was absolutely brilliant; it was reminiscent of Billy Crystal’s awesome Academy Awards openings. Seriously. That good.

It opened with Kimmel in the back of O.J. Simpson’s Bronco, with Malcolm-Jamal Warner (as Al Cowlings, O.J. Simpson’s best friend), driving down the freeway. Then, Warner dropped him off, and Kimmel got in the car with the Modern Family Dunphy family.

When they crashed due to a malfunctioning magic trick smoke bomb (obviously Phil always has one of those in his sleeve), there was a Hawkins Power and Light van there, which, if you watch Stranger Things, you know to avoid. Luckily for Kimmel, James Corden picked him up. Well, it was lucky until he made him sing “Carpool Karaoke” to “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.” Also in the skit were Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer from VEEP, Jeb Bush (like the actual Jeb Bush, which was hilarious), a dragon from Game Of Thrones, and a very roasted Ryan Seacrest.

Even if Kimmel drops the rest of the show like a hot potato, this opening sequence is one that the internet and television entertainment shows will be rehashing all week long. It shows that Kimmel is a ready, willing, and able Emmys host. If he nails the whole show, maybe Kimmel will get asked to host the Emmys again. I definitely wouldn’t hate seeing a sequence like that every year.
