Kerry Washington Isn't Focused On Her Kid's Gender

At Sunday night's Emmy Awards, Kerry Washington redefined red carpet fashion. The mom-to-be took maternity style to a whole new level as she looked like a queen in her cutout gown. News of her pregnancy first broke back in May. So, is Washington having a baby girl or boy? It's actually a surprise — and she's choosing to keep it that way. Prior to the award show, the 39-year-old told Entertainment Tonight,

"We don't know, yeah. I'm open — honestly, healthy, happy baby —that's what we want."

The fact that she's more focused on the baby's health than gender is significant. It shows her focus is on what's important and she's not limiting the kid to any preconceived gender expectations. Ultimately, whether she has a boy or girl, having a child who's happy and safe should be priority number-one. This will be Washington's second baby with Nnamdi Asomugha. The couple has a 2-year-old daughter Isabelle. Considering she's 9 months pregnant, Washington's baby will be here before you know it. She joked during a red carpet interview with Extra,

"I'm close, I'm close. If you see me scooting across stage, it's 'cause we have another week of shooting — we've got to keep it inside."

Clearly, she's dedicated to the show, since she continues filming with an almost full-sized baby in her stomach. No wonder she continues to receive praise for Scandal, season after season.

Regardless of her future baby's gender, it sounds like she will support the kid no matter what. That's because Washington has been an outspoken advocate for feminism, which makes me believe that she'll teach the child all about equality — and they won't be limited by whichever gender they're born. She'd likely raise a strong, empowered girl, or an equally smart, inspired boy. It's a win-win.

It's only a matter of time before the little one arrives. So if you're dying to know whether it'll be a baby boy or baby girl, you'll just have to hold out a tiny bit longer. Until then, enjoy Washington's fierce maternity fashion. As she said herself, she was a "superhero" on the red carpet.
