17 Awesome Date Night Movies

by Teresa Newsome

I have a lot of anxiety feels about Netflix date nights these days. Everyone's talking about "Netflix and chill" and how it actually means "Netfix and intercourse" (or whatever kind of sexy times you have), and now I don't know if I am supposed to wear nice underwear and shave above the knee when someone invites me over for a movie. Then again, I also get anxiety over whether or not the mail carrier is judging me based on my catalog subscriptions, so that's where I'm at in my life. As for everyone else, I'm sure you have your Netflix social situations on lock. And if you don't, I'm sure you use all those healthy communication and boundary skills you learned here on Bustle to figure it out, because you're empowered and stuff.

For the sake of argument, let's assume two things. 1. You know it's a date night. 2. You're going to actually watch the movie, and then you can decide if and who gets to see whose underwear. Now I feel like we can talk about these movies with a clear head, just in time to address our next problem: selection paralysis. You know, that thing where you don't actually get to watch a movie because you spend the entire date looking for something to watch? Yeah, no. We can't have that. That's why I'm going to make you a list of Netflix movies to watch when you're looking for date night ideas. That will get you pretty far. The rest is up to you.

1. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

You can totally have cute conversations about whether you'd erase each other after a breakup if you could.

2. Princess Bride

You can decide who smells of elderberries. But in a romantic way.

3. The Best Of Me

When your hopeless romantic says they want to watch The Notebook, you can one up them with this other Nicholas Sparks heart-melter.

4. Practical Magic

Love under impossible circumstances makes for a perfect date movie.

5. Grease

The couple who musicals together stays together.

6. Clueless

You can use this as a test to screen if you and your potential mate are a real match. Because anyone who hates this movie is clearly not for you.

7. 50 First Dates

You can also use this as a test, because you don't date people who like Adam Sandler movies. I'm just kidding! Or am I?

8. Forrest Gump

You're scandalous. And Brilliant. I see what you did there. You picked a three-hour movie to extend your cuddle time. I'm not even mad.

9. The Wedding Planner

What? You're not dropping hints. You just like this movie.

10. Sixteen Candles

You can go vintage and bask in how your parents did romance.

11. Last Holiday

Christmas movies and Queen Latifah are for all seasons, haters to the left.

12. Rent

You can console each other through all the cry scenes.

13. Serendipity

You really like this date, and they might be the one, so you decide to show them the greatest romantic movie of all time. And you hope they'll leave you a single black cashmere glove one day.

14. Crossroads

Whether you love the crap out of it, or just watch it for the LOLs, you're going to have a good time.

15. Blue Is The Warmest Color

It's artsy lesbian love. I don't feel like I need to say much more.

16. Across The Universe

It's a musical, but I mean, it's not really a musical. It's kind of like a painting set to music with people who do stuff. That should be printed on the DVD case.

17. Amelie

Just so freaking wonderful and cute. Just like you.

I hope this list helps you find something great to watch while you fill the time between worrying if they're going to show up and worrying if you're going to kiss. It's hard out there, but at least we have Netflix.
