This Is How Powder Lipstick Works

2016 seems to be the year of beauty products you need to see to believe: Face masks that bubble when you put them on, lipstick that looks like melted gold, rainbow highlighter that retails for under $5.... and those are only the ones from the last month. Now, you can officially add powder lipstick to the list of new beauty products that basically belong on display in "Ripley's Believe it Or Not!". But what exactly is powder lipstick, and how does it work?

Powder lipstick has been popular in Korea (like all of our favorite, revolutionary beauty products) for a while, but came to the American market in 2015. To put it simply, it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like: Lipstick made out of powder. It comes out of its tube like a loose eyeshadow, but melts into liquid when it comes in contact with your skin. When you apply it to your lips, it somehow looks like regular matte lipstick.

According to product reviews online, it's apparently very long-lasting, and looks great as a standalone product or as a base underneath other lipsticks. In fact, most people say it's more like a "stain" than a regular lipstick or gloss.

What is this sorcery?!

Touch In Sol Chroma Powder Lip Tint, $20, Sephora

To apply powder lipstick, all you have to do is use the flat side of the applicator tip to fill in your lips with color, and you can increase the color by adding multiple coats. It can also be used as blush, and who doesn't love a double-whammy beauty product?

The powder is actually superior to regular lipstick or gloss for a few reasons: Firstly, it doesn't smudge. Ever. You can literally kiss a mirror (check it out in the video below) and your color won't come off. Second of all, it doesn't feel sticky or goopy (...because it's powder), and one beauty blogger actually described it as, "weightless to the point of zero feel."

Finally, it allows for color gradation because you can apply different parts of the powder to various parts of your lip, which can help you achieve the ombre look.

Pretty cool, huh?

To make your lips look extra gorgeous with the powder, make sure you exfoliate and moisturize them before you apply color. That way, the formula will go on smoothly and your skin won't look dry underneath.

Just in case you aren't convinced yet, the Chroma line's color names include "Katnyss," "Hermione," and "Arya."

Told you it was sorcery.
