You Can Register To Vote On Snapchat Now

There are a lot of ways to register to vote — by mail, at the DMV, or... through Snapchat? That's right: You can now register to vote on Snapchat. It might seem like a joke, but turns out to be totally real. Who knew you could make arrangements to do your civic duty in the same place you make custom filters for your selfies?

So how does this whole thing work? It's made possible through a partnership between Snapchat and the voting nonprofit TurboVote. Snapchat has included embedded promo videos for the campaign featuring celebrities such as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jimmy Fallon, and Ciara, encouraging users to vote. If users follow their instructions to swipe up on the video, they are then re-directed to TurboVote's sign-up page, where they can start the registration process.

It's simple and easy — and it can all be done from within Snapchat.

It's also a pretty genius strategy for signing up more young voters. Young voters are typically the least likely to register to vote, and don't historically turn out during elections in the same numbers that older generations do. This despite the fact that young people tend to be, arguably, the more affected by political decisions. After all, we're going to have to live with the implications of political decisions for decades to come.

So if you want to get young people more involved in politics, it makes sense to find them where they are to make your pitch. And where young people are is, obviously, Snapchat.

The Snapchat voter registration campaign will last until Oct. 7. To participate, just swipe left on the main Snapchat page to view the promotional videos; then swipe your way to the TurboVote registration page. You could also take the direct approach and go right to TurboVote.org to register.

What's more, Snapchat and TurboVote aren't the only ones to team up in the hopes of getting millennials to the polls this November; another service called HelloVote allows you to register to vote through Facebook, Facebook's Messenger app, and by texting “HELLO” to 384-387.

But no matter how you do it, make sure you register — and that you vote. The fates of the country and the world literally depend on it.
