15 Creative 2016 Halloween Costume Ideas

by Chelsey Grasso

Don't feel like giving in to lame store-bought costumes this Oct. 31? Then I'm here to save the day (or night, rather) with these creative 2016 Halloween costume ideas that avoid going the usual route of the "one size fits all" polyester suits that your typical costume store tries to sell for ridiculous and overpriced amounts of money. These creative costume ideas are for those of us who would rather pull from our own closets and pick up the occasional cheap accessory to complete the look. Join our crowd if you haven't already, because our costumes are the ones people are still talking about the next day.

These costume ideas include some throwbacks to the '90s, current day trends, and just about everything in between. If you want to be the star of the Halloween party you'll be attending this year (or at the very least, get a couple of head nods in response to your costume), then one of these ensembles is undoubtedly the way to go.

From Angelica Pickles and Pikachu to Totoro and the Morton Salt Girl, you've got a slew of options to choose from. Don't hold yourself back this year, and instead, embrace your creativity that's aching to be put to use this Oct. 31.

1. Pikachu

The inspiration:

The costume:

Yellow Hoodie, $15, Amazon; Yellow Sweats, $9, Amazon; Ears and Tail, $27, Amazon; Cheek Color, $23, Amazon

Want to be comfy this Halloween? Pair a yellow hoodie with some yellow sweats for your costume's base. Pick up your ears and tail and cheek color to finish up the look. Be careful though, you may cause a frenzy with the latest "Pokemon Go" craze taking over your friends' phones everywhere. (I wish I was kidding.)

2. Troll

The inspiration:

The costume:

Wacky Wig, $20, Amazon; Basic Dress, $69, titlenine

Remember those freaky little trolls we all used to collect as kids? Best Halloween costume ever. All you need is a wacky wig and a basic dress. As for the creepy factor, you'll be responsible for providing that on your own.

3. Beyonce's Lemonade

The inspiration:

The costume:

P rettiest Lemon Dress , $26, Amazon; Killer Heels, $66, Amazon; Baseball Bat, $30, Amazon

Beyonce's Lemonade was basically the biggest moment in music this year, and the costume is relatively simple. Just put on your prettiest lemon dress, a pair of killer heels, and of course, carry a wooden bat at your side all night long. And if you don't own a lemon dress? Well, you should change that immediately anyway.

4. Beauty Blender

The inspiration:

The costume:

Foam, $19, janelonline

If these squishy things weren't the most talked about product in the beauty world this year, then I don't know what was. Stock up on some pick foam and get to work sculpting yourself.

5. Hipster Ariel

The inspiration:

The costume:

Mermaid Wig, $20, Amazon; Teal Skirt, $15, R ue21 ; Purple Crop Top, $8, Y oins ; Frames, $32, Amazon

She's just so angsty, how could you not love her? You can't be hipster Ariel without a mermaid wig, a teal skirt, and a purple crop top. Oh, and don't forget the frames, obviously.

6. Piñata

The inspiration:

The costume:

Tissue paper, $10, Amazon; 500 Bulk Candy Assortment, $45, Amazon

When you're a piñata for Halloween, it really doesn't matter what you wear, so long as you cover your clothing in thin strips of tissue paper and hand out candy every time somebody touches you. You'll be the hit of the party... just watch out for Beyonce's Lemonade (see above).

7. Hello Kitty

The inspiration:

The costume:

Overalls, $22, Jcpenney; Cat Ears, $10, Spirithalloween; Yellow Shirt, $24, Amazon

Pull out the overalls and get yourself some cat ears to go with them. A simple, yellow shirt completes this costume. Meow!

8. Hermione Granger

The inspiration:

The costume:

Gryffindor Tie, $20, Amazon; Black Skirt, $9, Amazon; Charcoal Sweater, $70, Uniqlo; White Button-Up Blouse, $14, Hm

Just admit it, you already have a Gryffindor tie hidden in the back of your sock drawer anyway. Put it to use this Halloween, along with a black skirt, charcoal sweater, and white button-up blouse. Want to go above and beyond? Grab a stick and spend the evening calling it your "wand."

9. Totoro

The inspiration:

The costume:

Totoro Onesie, $28, Amazon; Leaf Hat, $10 Amazon; Blue Umbrella, $20, Amazon

It's pretty much impossible to be a Totoro without a Totoro onesie, but pair it with a leaf hat and a big, blue umbrella, and you'll have really perfected the look.

10. Waldo

The inspiration:

The costume:

Striped Red And White Shirt, $35, Jcrew; Basic Jeans, $33, Amazon; Circular Glasses, $29, Eyebuydirect; Striped Beanie, $19, Kohls; Brown Cane, $33, Amazon

11. Morton Salt Girl

The inspiration:

The costume:

Yellow Mini Dress, $27, Amazon; Biggest Blue Umbrella, $275, Turnullandasser; Morton Salt, $7, Amazon

Grab a yellow mini dress and your biggest blue umbrella to transform yourself into the Morton Salt Girl. Oh, and don't you dare walk out your front door without a giant canister of iodized salt.

12. Sushi Roll

The inspiration:

The costume:

White Shirt, $13, H&M; White Leggings, $32, Amazon; Dark Green Scarf, $151, Yoox; Salmon Colored Pillow, $12, Amazon; Soy Sauce Packets, $17, Amazon

If you love eating sushi, why not spend all of Oct. 31 dressed up as a roll? A white shirt and white leggings are your base. Next, use a dark green scarf to tie a salmon colored pillow to your stomach. Toss in some soy sauce packets for an added effect.

13. Angelica Pickles

The inspiration:

The costume:

Cynthia, $16, Etsy; Purple Bows, $8, Amazon; Red Shirt, $32, Amazon; Purple Jumper, $18, Jcpenney

You can't be Angelica Pickles without your Cynthia, so pick one up stat. Tack on some purple bows and layer up in a red shirt and purple jumper to become an official member of the Rugrats crew.

The costume:

Supergirl Swimsuits, $20, Maykool; Red Skirt, $50, Jcrew; Long Red Cape, $15, Amazon; Leather Boots, $37, Amazon

15. A Bunch of Grapes

The inspiration:

The costume:

Purple Balloons, $5, Amazon; Leaf Crown, $32, Amazon

Don't want people getting too close to you at the Halloween parties you'll be attending? Cover yourself in inflated purple balloons! A leaf crown makes a nice final touch.
