Alice Has A Terrifying "Power" On 'Gotham'

by Kayla Hawkins

New Gotham villain Jervis Tetch may eventually become his comic book alias the Mad Hatter, but for now, he's just the latest arrival in Gotham City, working at Barbara and Tabitha's club as a hypnotist and concocting creepy schemes to steal money. Jervis did have another goal in his Gotham debut: to hunt down his missing younger sister. However, one Jim Gordon investigation later, it was revealed that Jervis' sister Alice has destructive blood that seemingly transforms people into... well, the landlord that we saw get affected by her blood was angry, manic, and ready to attack Jim before Alice killed him and burned his body. And the way she was reacting to the people she infected made them seem a whole lot like zombies.

If Jervis gets his hands on Alice's hyper-destructive blood, he'll be able to destroy the city — if the poison doesn't destroy him first. And while he already seems pretty deranged, a hypnotist who's as powerful as he is should not be running around the city in a poison-induced haze. It might make him even more dangerous than he already is. Another serious possibility is that the people Alice infects will become contagious, since she burns down anywhere her blood spills, and if that's the case, Jervis could wreak even more havoc with her blood in his possession.

Though it's obvious that Alice's blood is extremely dangerous, it's not clear why exactly the future Mad Hatter wants to control this "power" so desperately. Jervis' hypnosis skills have already proven to be pretty infallible, as in addition to forcing that helpless couple into a murder-suicide, he was able to put Barbara under his spell and nearly goad her into slicing his throat. He must have a plan to use Alice for his own benefit, perhaps by controlling her to use her blood for terrible reasons.

In DC Comics, the Mad Hatter was a neuroscientist who used his knowledge to literally control people's minds, while on Gotham so far he doesn't have a scientific edge. Maybe he's hoping to bottle Alice's Strange-given powers — or, maybe he'll have his own encounter with Strange that boosts his abilities. For now, I'm rooting for Alice and Jim to become the next ass-kicking Gotham duo and stop Jervis before his villainous transformation is complete.
