Johnny Depp Isn't In The New 'Pirates' Trailer

by Nicole Pomarico

It's been five years since the last Pirates of The Caribbean movie hit theaters, and now, the first look at the fifth installment in the franchise here. On Sunday night, the first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales debuted, and one very important member of the cast was missing. As many fans have pointed out on Twitter after watching the Pirates of the Caribbean trailer, Johnny Depp isn't in it. But is that because Depp's Jack Sparrow seems to be MIA, or for another reason entirely?

Bustle has reached out to Disney for comment on why Depp is not featured in the new trailer, but has not yet received a response.

First things first: the actual trailer, which aired for the first time during Fear the Walking Dead's season finale. Like most films in the series, this one is pretty dark. Jack Sparrow appears on a wanted poster, and the very scary Captain Salazar (played by Javier Bardem) is determined to find him on his mission to kill every pirate in the sea. He asks Brenton Thwaites' character, Henry, to relay the message to Jack that "death will come straight for him," and this dude is so terrifying that it's impossible not to believe him. The trailer includes all the trappings that fans of POTC will love, including fire, sword fights, ghost pirates, and plenty of action.

It's unclear if Depp is missing from the trailer because the hunt is on for Jack Sparrow, or if his role is being downplayed after everything that happened surrounding Depp's divorce from Amber Heard. After reports surfaced about Depp allegedly assaulting Heard, they were able to settle both their divorce case and Heard's domestic violence case against Depp in August.

It'll be interesting to see what happens as promotion for the movie continues — and Depp's involvement in future POTC films, if there are any. We'll have to wait until we get closer to the movie's May 2017 release to find out.

At the time of their divorce settlement, Heard and Depp released the following statement to TMZ:

Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains. There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity.
