'American Horror Story' Is Renewed For Season 7

by Amy Mackelden

Here's something that we all probably saw coming. American Horror Story has been renewed for Season 7, which means we have a lot more mystery, gore, and crazy plot-twists in all our futures. FX released a statement on Tuesday praising the show's creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, and it's clear that the network want to continue developing the award-winning series, which I couldn't be happier about. The CEO of FX, John Landgraf, said, “Ryan, Brad and their team of remarkable writers have done an amazing job of keeping American Horror Story endlessly inventive, shocking and entertaining and we are honored to move ahead with them on the seventh installment." Most importantly, though, could this be Ryan Murphy's secret season of American Horror Story ?

Murphy told EW in Sept. 2016 that the secret season would be unexpected in every way — from when it airs, to the fact that one writer is tackling the entire thing. He said, "I don’t know when it will air, but it's also an experiment... We might get them done and shoot them on the sly and drop it." Most definitely inspired by the current trend for surprise releasing albums, his plan for the secret season of American Horror Story sounds extremely exciting, but it also sounds quite separate from Season 7.

It's unsurprising that FX would want to continue the franchise, especially since the show has won 15 Emmy Awards to date. The fact that American Horror Story is an anthology series means that it's unpredictable, and can explore any genre, historical idea, or legend that it wants. It sounds as though Murphy intends to do just that. As Landgraf said, "The sustained success through six installments only proves how intensely the series resonates with fans," and this fandom is the reason that people are so keen to find out more about the so-called secret season. If the season Murphy was referring to isn't the recently announced seventh season, then what could it possibly be about, and when might it eventually air?

As the co-creator has stipulated his desire to surprise release the secret season of American Horror Story , it's likely that it will be released online at an unexpected moment. Remember back to how excited you were when Lemonade came out — that's what it will be like. It doesn't sound as though filming has started as yet, so fans will have to wait a while for both the seventh and the secret season of American Horror Story. At least we all have Season 6 to keep us going.
