Trump Retweeted A Stupid Joke About Kaine

by Charlie Beckerman

Entering the fray of the vice presidential debate Tuesday evening by re-tweeting an insult about Tim Kaine, Donald Trump said the Democratic VP candidate "looks like an evil crook out of the Batman movies."

The Republican presidential nominee, famous for his risqué tweets and re-tweets, sent out the jab less than 30 minutes into the debate, apparently referring to Kaine's infamously arched left eyebrow. The insult came within minutes of Trump's VP pick Mike Pence attempting to claim that Kaine's running mate, Hillary Clinton, was leading an "insult-driven" campaign.

This isn't the first time Trump's re-tweeting has gotten him into hot water. In March, Trump posted an image comparing his wife, Melania, to primary competitor Ted Cruz's wife, Heidi. later, in July, Trump re-tweeted a composite image critical of Clinton, with a six-pointed star reading "Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!" over a background of cash, which was taken by some to be an anti-Semitic gesture.

Trump's tweet was a first for presidential politics, moving beyond the standard Twitter-spin, with a presidential candidate resorting to name-calling during the VP debate. While the Clinton campaign has been tweeting as well, most of their tweets have been quotations from Kaine or re-tweets from his account. They did, however, single out Trump's tweet.

With Twitter still a relatively new force in presidential campaigns, it's unclear if we're in a new era of down-and-dirty politics, or if this is just the continued magic of the Trump campaign.
