'AHS: Roanoke' Will Explain Dandy Mott's Family

by Alaina Urquhart-White

We are only a few episodes into Season 6 of American Horror Story and it has already proven to be one of the most disturbing and suspenseful yet. With so many series connections popping up already, it's no wonder that fans have been watching with eagle eyes for anything that ties back to previous seasons of the series. Luckily Ryan Murphy kindly informed us in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that we can look forward to hearing the family backstory for American Horror Story: Freak Show character Dandy Mott in Wednesday's Episode 4.

You may remember Dandy (played by the dreamy Finn Wittrock) for being one of the most terrifying and creepiest villains to come out of American Horror Story. You see, dandy Mott was modeled after Norman Bates. Norman Bates was modeled after real life killer Ed Gein. You can see why this may get scary. For a quick refresher on Mr. Gein, he had a pretty close relationship with his mother and by "pretty close," I will refer you to the movie Psycho. According to History.com, he was linked to two murders and also confessed to robbing graves and taking various body parts and skin to make household objects like furniture and to fashion together a human suit of his very own.

Dandy is a pretty good homage. He and his mother Gloria (played flawlessly by Frances Conroy) had a relationship that will send a shiver down your spine. It was clear from the beginning of Freak Show that he would turn his oddness into homicide and his obsession with owning the "freaks" in Elsa Mars' show only took him further into madness. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), Dandy died at the hands of the "freaks" he terrorized. So, it's safe to say he won't be returning in Roanoke, but it looks like we will finally get a little insight into what kind of background he came from.

To get you ready for some Mott talk in Episode 4, here is a refresher course on the things that made Dandy and his family so terrifying.

His Childlike Personality

Dandy was essentially a toddler in a creepy man's body. He regularly flew into tantrums and had a habit of yelling, "I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!" whenever something was emotionally upsetting to him or didn't go his way. That phrase is actually the last one he uttered as he drowned in the final episode.

He Drank From A Baby Bottle

He drank cognac from a crystal baby bottle, emblazoned with his name. Yes, it had a nipple and everything. It was and still is unsettling on a level previously unknown to my brain. I feel dirty even writing that.

He Had Puppets

I mean, if you are not Jeff Dunham, this is a problem.

His Mom Got Him A Clown

That would be weird enough considering he's a grown man, but when Dandy grew bored and found himself in a rut, Gloria literally found him a dirty, mute, homicidal clown on the side of the road to cheer him up. Did your mom ever do that for you? Let's hope not.

He Murdered People

Obviously. When Dandy found out that his pal Twisty the clown was a homicidal maniac, he took to it like a true natural. He killed his mother, an entire Tupperware party, a maid, a childhood friend, and, in the end, he massacred almost all of the "freaks" from Elsa's show. He ended up leaving only Jimmy Darling (Evan Peters), Bette and Dot (Sarah Paulson), and Desiree (Angela Bassett) alive.

Dandy was a bad dude and his mother was equally as weird for enabling and possibly engaging in inappropriate relations with him. It will be intriguing to see where the Mott family got its psychosis from. I am very interested to learn this family's rotten roots on Wednesday's episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke.
