Wonder Woman Stamps Are Now Available

Start writing letters, people. The U.S. Postal Service has partnered with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products to produce Wonder Woman stamps in honor of the character's 75th anniversary. The Forever stamps come in four designs, representing Wonder Woman's evolution from through the Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Modern Ages of comics. The Wonder Woman stamps made their debut at 9 A.M. on Friday at DC Entertainment's New York Comic Con booth.

Designed by polygraph inventor William Moulton Marston as an intellectual and non-violent superhero, Wonder Woman first appeared in All Star Comics No. 8, back in 1941. Wonder Woman No. 1 hit store shelves in Summer 1942, just a few months after the Amazon made her first cover appearance in Sensation Comics No. 1. That cover is recreated for the U.S. Postal Service's Golden Age Wonder Woman stamp.

In keeping with her mission of peace, very little of Wonder Woman's equipment is offensive. Her most iconic weapon, the Lasso of Truth, extracts the truth from anyone ensnared by it, and her magic bracelets can deflect bullets. Wonder Woman also wields a boomerang tiara and the Sword of Athena.

This is not the first time the U.S. Postal Service has issued Wonder Woman stamps. In 2006, Wonder Woman was part of the DC Super Heroes pane, which featured Aquaman, Batman, Superman, and Supergirl, among others.

Although she has been in print continuously for more than 40 years, Wonder Woman's popularity with the public has not translated into the same kind of widespread media representation as Batman and Superman. Aside from the iconic 1970s TV show starring Lynda Carter, Wonder Woman has never been part of a standalone series or film.

She has, however, become the most recognizable female superhero and a feminist icon. She appeared on the cover of Ms. Magazine's first issue, which was emblazoned with a rallying cry: "Wonder Woman for President." Forty years later, in 2012, Wonder Woman made another Ms. Magazine appearance, this time marching with protesters to help stop the War on Women.

DC's anniversary celebration, Wonder Woman 75, began this summer and will run until June 2, 2017, when the first-ever Wonder Woman movie hits theaters. The celebration includes the U.S. Postal Service's Wonder Woman stamps, as well as clothing, cosmetics, accessories, and other merchandise.

If you're a Wonder Woman fan, you can get in on the fesivities by sharing your favorite stories, images, and other media on Twitter and Instagram, using the hashtag #WonderWoman75. Also, be sure to spread the hype about the U.S. Postal Service's awesome release by using the #WonderWomanForever hashtag.

The new Wonder Woman stamps may be purchased in sheets of 20 from the U.S. Postal Service for $9.40.
