What Will The 'Fantastic Beasts' Sequels Be About?

by Mary Grace Garis

For Potterheads, there are two acceptable knee-jerk reactions to the impending debut of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them: One, elation at the thought of another foray into the wizarding world and two, shock that we're so lucky to get even more Harry Potter-themed films. Well, prepare to feel shocked again if you fall into the latter category, because J.K. Rowling just announced there will be five Fantastic Beasts films in total during a major fan event Thursday. Yes, you read that right: five movies based off of the Harry Potter textbook. If you're anything like me, you might be wondering: What will the Fantastic Beasts movie sequels be about?

We know the basic premise of the first movie focuses on Newt Scamander accidentally having his briefcase of beasts unleashed on New York City, and without knowing all the deeds (i.e. the movie hasn't debuted yet) it was easy to presume the story would be solved and finished by the film's end. But now, maybe since we have five sequels, each film will focus on the return of a specific beast? It's definitely a possibility.

Also a possibility: there may be a familiar face that the plot could focus on. Also according to the Fantastic Beasts event, it seems the late great Albus Dumbledore and his evil secret crush Grindelwald could be featured in at least one of the upcoming films, which would give fans more than enough reason to stick around for five more films. And, in case you're not eager to see Newt traipse around New York for film after film, you can also take comfort in the fact that the scenery is set to change. Newt will be hanging in a different capitol in the next film, and presumably it's sequels after that.

But beyond these tidbits, it's still pretty unclear what the finite details of the next five plots will be. What's certain is that Rowling is adamant that these five films are necessary to the plot: In response to a fan's reasonable question of "Don't you think it's too much," Rowling took to Twitter to defend the film-extending. "I think, when you realise what story we're *really* telling, you'll understand that it can't possibly fit in one movie!" she said.

Considering this is the woman who brought us all into this world of magic, it's definitely worth continuing to be psyched over the onslaught new, fresh Potterverse stories. Feel free to join Newt on his long, five-movie-long journey when Fantastic Beast And Where To Find Them hits theaters Nov. 18.
