Ricky Gervais' 'The Office' Character Gets Rebirth

by Alicia Lutes

By now we're all more than aware that Ricky Gervais is the genius that brought The Office to life in the United Kingdom, ultimately leading to its stateside successor, right? And we also already know that Steve Carell's Michael Scott was a take on Gervais' character, David Brent, right? OK, good. Well then perhaps you'll be pleased to hear that David Brent's time on the screen may not be a thing of the past, thanks to the actor's desire to send Brent's band out on tour and direct a documentary about it. Oh good lord yes, comedy gods. Yes.

According to an interview with U.K.'s The Sunday Times, the comedian has an idea we're willing to bet people will be all-to-excited to put money behind: sending Brent's band, Foregone Conclusion, out on tour. Brent, naturally, would direct the subsequent tour documentary, ensuring that not a moment of this musicomedy mash-up is missed. And considering the success of Forgone Conclusion's 2013 debut shows — all three of which sold out in less than 15 seconds, prompting a subsequent tour this May — we're certain there's enough interest from a fan perspective to get this thing off the ground.

"It's just an idea. I want to do a tour, a little tour — and people think they're seeing a tour. I film it, but actually it's Brent who thinks he’s making a Scorsese-type thing of On the Road," explained Gervais. "Of course, behind the scenes, it is so much sadder and more poignant ... It's Spinal Tap meets sad Scorsese meets Anvil. It’s more of a breakdown of this man who thought he was going to be something else."

So, yeah. Go ahead and chalk this one under "things we would very much like to see." Oh, and please dear lord if the show comes overseas, get Michael Scott in there, somehow. Some way. Please?
