With the success of stage musical productions like The Sound Of Music, Grease, The Wiz, and Peter Pan, it was only a matter of time before The Rocky Horror Picture Show came along to subvert the genre (and encourage millions of eyes to be glued to their television screens). FOX's The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do The Time Warp Again has a cast full of musical stars, but there’s one big question for me — are the stars of FOX's Rocky Horror Picture Show remake lip-syncing? Bustle reached out to FOX for comment, but has not yet received a reply.
I’m excited but hesitant about the remake — it’s always hard to put together a cast that will be as good as the original. I like what I'm used to, you know? That being said, the cast of Let’s Do The Time Warp Again is pretty solid. It starts Victoria Justice as Janet, Ryan McCarran as Brad, Reeve Carney as Riff Raff, Adam Lambert as Eddie, Christina Milian as Magenta, Annaleigh Ashford as Columbia, and Laverne Cox as Frank-N-Furter. All of these people can sing — Ashford has been nominated for multiple Tony Awards, taking home one of them — so even though the show isn’t live, the recordings are the actors themselves — no My Fair Lady overdubbing here. I couldn't definitively find an answer on whether they sung live during filming, but lip-syncing is pretty standard when it comes to pre-recorded events, especially if there's a lot of choreography. A notable exception is the Les Mis movie where all the vocals were done during filming. But, since it was an impressive feat, the news was everywhere.
If you’re particularly into the new music from Let’s Do The Time Warp Again, the soundtrack hits stores and streaming on Oct. 21, just one day after the production airs. And, here’s a fun tidbit for those of you who love the original — according to Billboard, Grammy Award-nominated songwriter Cisco Adler produced the new soundtrack. He’s the son of Lou Adler, who helped produce the original soundtrack in 1975. The elder Adler is an executive producer on the new soundtrack, and it’s being released on his own label, Ode Sounds & Visuals, as the original was. Everything old is new again, huh?
Aside from the vocals, will the new Rocky Horror Picture Show contain the weird delight and alien-induced craziness of the original? We’ll have to tune in to find out, but I’m hopeful for a solid retelling of a cult-classic story.
