These Are 2016's Most Popular Halloween Costumes

When it comes to Halloween, there are few things more enjoyable than choosing your costume. Whether you plan your costume months ahead of time or throw them together right before you go out with whatever supplies you have available, most of us are curious to know what the most popular Halloween costumes are. Some people dislike the idea of showing up wearing what everybody else is rocking, while others are relieved to get a list of handy ideas from the beloved internet. That's why Google's FrightGeist list of the current reigning Halloween costumes is so useful — not only can you see the what people are dressing up as nationwide, you can even narrow it down to your own location. After all, what is super popular in the Northwest might vary greatly from what people will be wearing in Florida.

In describing their data and how they compiled these lists, the FrightGeist website explains, "Every year, trillions of searches take place on Google, and Google Trends gives us an unparalleled look at what the world is searching for. With FrightGeist, we went on a hunt to find the most popular costumes." Specifically, FrightGeist shows you the top 500 most popular costumes in the United States. You also have the option to download the data from Github if you really want to dig into the numbers, because hey, a little statistics never ruined a good Halloween party, right? I'm sure there's a good math pun costume in there somewhere.

While you can check out the full list over at FrightGeist, here are the 10 most popular Halloween costumes across the country in the meantime. Have you got your plan in place yet?

1. Harley Quinn

Given the fact that Margot Robbie's Harley was the high point of Suicide Squad, it's no surprise that so many people want to be her for Halloween this year. Her costume is also fairly easy to put together, provided you have red and blue hair dye and a baseball bat.

2. The Joker

In spite of how very problematic the relationship between Harley Quinn and The Joker is, it's not surprising that many people would choose to go as a coordinating pair.

3. Superhero

A generic search, for certain, but there are a ton of superheroes out there, and many of them are pretty easy costumes to put together. If you're handy with felt and a glue gun and have a cape handy, you're basically all set to transform into anybody you want (magical powers not included).

4. Pirate

A pirate costume is fun and simple to put together if you're going solo or in a group. If you get yourself a (fake) talking parrot for your shoulder, all the better!

5. Wonder Woman

Ah, Wonder Woman: Everyone's favorite feminist icon. And Wonder Woman is queer, to boot!

6. Witch

Initially a little boring, but don't knock the classics! Besides, if you dress up as a witch, you can easily guard the cauldron full of candy (or spiked punch, depending on your crowd) for your own enjoyment.

7. Batman

Obviously we need a few good superheroes with all of the Harley Quinns and Jokers running around, right?

8. Star Wars

There are a ton of cool characters to dress up as from Star Wars, though these costumes require a little more planning and preparation. But come on: Who doesn't want to be Yoda at least once in their lifetime? Imagine the sage advice you can deliver during a huge sugar rush.

9. Clown

Given the degree of creepy clown sightings around the country, I personally am hoping not to run into very many clowns on Halloween this year. But the costume is a classic, so it's sure to be possible.

10. Dinosaur

I have to admit that this one surprised me a little bit, but hey, dinosaurs are awesome. Also, if you invest in one of those full-body dinosaur costumes, you can definitely wear it for a good couple of years before retiring it.

Be sure to check out the full list at Google FrightGeist, and have a happy Halloween, everybody!
