Lin-Manuel & The Rock's Message For Moviegoers

by Caitlyn Callegari

I am always endlessly annoyed by people who text during movies. You know, until I'm the one doing it for whatever hypocritical reason I deem necessary at the time. Suddenly, I become one of those very people that I begrudge. At one point or another, most of us have been just a little bit rude about using our phones while other people are trying to watch a movie. This is exactly why Moana's Lin-Manuel Miranda and Dwayne Johnson want you to stop texting. Or else. According to Entertainment Weekly, they feel so strongly about this that they actually made a public service announcement to get their message across. Yes, for real. I would never lie to you about something so vital.

Per EW, "The video was made for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which has a strict no talking, no texting policy — and plenty of celebrities to back that rule up." But I'd like to think that despite other celebrities taking a stand against rude phone use, these two actors in particular made for an especially intimidating duo. Case in point, Johnson captioned his tweet with the video, "A very important message from @Lin_Manuel and myself. Don't do it ... or WE WILL FIND YOU. #Moana."

Against my more rebellious nature, I am far more inclined to heed the rules of the theater after watching that video. Why? Because as EW points out, the two are "raising the stakes" with their tactics. As much as I was expecting the former wrestler to lay down the law, I was caught off guard by just how aggressive the usually smiley and upbeat Miranda could be. It was all in good fun, of course. I mean, at least I think so. Let's put it this way, if it wasn't, I think Miranda would be a lot more pissed off about Johnson ruining his phone, despite it being a "sacrifice [he] was willing to make" for the cause. What I'm trying to say here is, point well taken, gentlemen.
