Mindy Kaling's 'Vogue' Shoot is Epic

by Tyler Atwood

Just when we think we have the magazine figured out, Vogue throws readers for a loop and includes a photo spread of Mindy Kaling in their April 2014 issue. Kaling announced the news on her Twitter account with an accompanying preview picture of the actress in a stunning crimson ensemble. Needless to say, the results are idiosyncratic, chic, and gorgeous.

Styled by Sara Moonves and photographed by Norma Jean Roy, the spread achieves the unthinkable by leaving the gorgeous star fairly un-Photoshoped while staying true to Kaling's feminine, kooky style. Only Kaling could pull off a side ponytail, ruffled rouge skirt, and polka dot heels with aplomb, and the actress does so with a witty sense of humor to boot.

The actress has kicked off 2014 in the most fashionable way possible, beginning with an ELLE cover that inadvertently began a vigorous debate on our culture's obsession with ultra-thin bodies, and now Vogue's couture photo shoot combined with a droll interview. The actress's chat touches on her experimentation with fashion, red carpet style, and most significantly, her intelligence. Kaling conveyed that clothing can be more than simply a beautiful ensemble, saying:

I love when clothes can help you project that you're witty — you know, when your outfit does some of the work for you.

Kaling's own style tends certainly conveys her acuity and effervescent personality, from cascading blue Temperley in 2009 to an off-duty ensemble of a burgundy peter-pan collar sweater with skinny jeans in 2012. We must say, we love a celebrity who looks just as chic dressed down as she does in designer couture, and we can't wait to crack open a copy of Vogue to see Kaling at her offbeat, elegant best.
