'Deadpool' Fans Petiton Tarantino To Direct Sequel

by Jordana Lipsitz

In light of news from Deadline Hollywood that Deadpool director Tim Miller has amicably left Deadpool 2 over creative differences with the film's lead actor, Ryan Reynolds, fans are shouting out their top choices to step in for the sequel. Not surprisingly, the master of gore and dialogue, Quentin Tarrantino has hopped to the top of some fans' lists. One fan, Carl Champion Jr. feels so strongly about Tarantino directing Deadpool, he started a petition to Ryan Reynolds via change.org requesting that the Kill Bill creator will sit in the Deadpool director's chair.

It certainly seems like Champion has the right idea. As he puts it on the petition webpage, "If there was ever a chance to see Tarantino do a project almost guaranteed to make a billion dollars, this is it. We got a great taste of what this could be like in Kill Bill, but imagine having a guy like Tarantino write dialogue for The Merc with the Mouth! It would be so glorious." I can't dispute that. It would be glorious. And I'm not the only one who agrees, not by a long shot. By Monday, October 24 at 6 p.m. ET, Champion had already gathered 2,115 signatures.

There are multiple reasons Tarantino would kill (pun intended) the role of directing Deadpool 2 but most fundamental for me is his emphasis on dialogue. Tarantino's words can send shivers up the spine particularly when the delivery is also on point (which it always is because he also manages to direct great actors). Remember that crazy scene in Pulp Fiction when Captain Koons (Christopher Walken) shares an entire monologue with young Butch Coolidge about how he and Butch's father smuggled a family wristwatch in their rectums during POW camp so that Mr. Coolidge could pass it on to his son? I still feel queasy just thinking about it. Meanwhile, Hans Landa's (Christoph Waltz) line, "Au Revoir, Shoshana" at the beginning of the film may or may not be the reason I plan to name my future child/pet Shoshana — it's a simple line but powerful and so chilling with Waltz's delivery. Can you imagine the combined power of good writing and awesome delivery of lines that would go down with a Tarantino/Reynolds combo? I can't even imagine.

Then, there's the violence aspect. Tarantino features blood and gore brought on by intense action scenes with every single one of his movies. It's sort of his wheelhouse. The action scenes in a Tarantino movie where the main character also happens to be essentially invincible would be insane. Tarantino's done the sword-play violence before, but with the goofy Deadpool approach, it would be so be fun to watch. The creativity Tarantino could put into the fight scenes would be intoxicating.

Meanwhile, Tarantino's always dabbled with genres and made them his own. While all of his movies could be defined as action they also could be given other genre titles, like historical fiction (Django Unchained), or martial arts (Kill Bill), or spaghetti western (The Hateful 8), or criminal suspense (Reservoir Dogs). Isn't it about time he jumped into one of America's most popular genres right now, the superhero film? Marvel goes all sorts of ways with their superhero content these days like the detective show Jessica Jones and the highly comedic vibes of Guardians of the Galaxy — so it's the perfect venue for Tarantino's style of genre-bending.

Sure, Tarantino probably isn't interested in directing a sequel to some comic book movie. He is, after all, an auteur of the highest order. And even if he did agree, who is to say he and Reynolds wouldn't have creative disagreements just like Miller and Reynolds? But maybe, just maybe, the two men will see that this is a match made in heaven and the Deadpool sequel they give us will be the perfect combination of their skills. There's only way to find out. Sign the petition and we'll see if Reynolds and Quarantino hear our pleas and react accordingly!
