Sookie's Already Hilarious In The New 'GG' Trailer

Good things come to those who wait, and luckily fans only have to hang on a little bit longer until Gilmore Girls hits Netflix. But in the meantime, there's something to hold you over, and it's the fact that Melissa McCarthy is hilarious in the Gilmore Girls trailer, which was released on Tuesday. While fans have been waiting a long time for this sneak peek and there's a lot to cover, Sookie St. James easily steals the show.

You have to wait almost two minutes for your first glimpse of Sookie, but then there she is — trademark bandana at all. She gets scared by something Lorelai does and squeezes an arc of frosting out of a bag. Probably because there was back-and-forth drama over whether Sookie would even be returning to Stars Hollow, that sight gag alone would have been enough for me, but then McCarthy really took it over the top. Staring at the mess she's made, she utters the pitch-perfect Sookie line, "Wow, that was pornographic." And I'm not exaggerating when I say that this line provides the proof I needed that this reboot will be exactly what fans are looking for.

McCarthy has always been a terrific and funny actor, and for that reason, Sookie is understandably many people's favorite part of the show. But I really don't think fans are prepared for the amount of humor she's going to bring to the role this time around. Obviously no one knows how much McCarthy gets to do until Nov. 25, but if the new trailer is any indication, every single moment will be a sparkling little gem. Just look at the magic she does with half-a-second.

McCarthy has honed her comedic chops significantly in the nine years since Gilmore Girls went off the air, so I have a feeling that will pay off once these episodes hit Netflix. The fact that she isn't showcased much in the trailer suggests to me that viewers don't get a lot of time with Sookie, but it also proves that McCarthy won't waste a single second onscreen. The revival came close to not having any Sookie at all, so that it makes every moment that much more important and McCarthy must feel that too. She crams so much expression into her face and such perfect comedic timing in this one moment, so I can't wait to see how it translates to the full episodes.
