'GG' Revival Trailer Hints At 'Bunheads' Crossover

by Caitlin Flynn

It seems like forever since we received the best news in the world. I am, of course, referring to the Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix, which was announced in January and will begin streaming on Netflix on Nov. 25. It would be an understatement to say that fans have spent the past 10 months dissecting every clue, from tweets to Instagram photos to hints dropped by cast members. Plenty of fans were intrigued to learn that Sutton Foster, the Tony Award winning actor/dancer who starred in Amy Sherman-Palladino's short-lived but amazing series Bunheads had joined the cast. And, the Bunheads references in the Gilmore Girls revival trailer provide some hints about what's in store.

Bunheads, which also starred Emily Gilmore (uh, I mean Kelly Bishop), was seriously underrated and it only lasted for one season — so I'm thrilled to see Foster get a second shot on a Sherman-Palladino series. And, based on the trailer, Gilmore Girls may focus on dance, specifically ballet, a little more than the original series. Sure, we always had Miss Patty's — but professionally trained ballet dancers starred on Bunheads and we got to enjoy some beautiful dance sequences as a result. Is it possible we'll see more ballet in the revival? Let's talk a closer look at the trailer:

First things first — let's talk about the Stars Hollow Musical, which is prominently featured in the trailer. In an interview with Vulture in April, Foster spilled some details about the musical and her role in the revival. She'll play a "struggling actress" (which explains why she headed to Stars Hollow for work) who stars in the musical, which takes place in Episode 3, "Summer." If you're concerned that we'll only see her briefly for the Stars Hollow production, there's no need to fret. Foster told the outlet:

"My scenes were at Miss Patty's dance studio. You know, it was amazing. It was surreal. I had two days and they went by so fast because I didn't want it to end."

So, she has multiple scenes and we'll likely get to see her character during rehearsal scenes. But, what if Foster is playing a bigger role than she's let on? At two points during the trailer (1:56 and 2:05), a group of teenage dancers is shown, first at Miss Patty's and then outside (presumably for the musical itself). Let's be blunt — Miss Patty is one of my favorite characters, but it was often a source of humor that her dancers didn't always exhibit the best technique. Furthermore, she was typically seen teaching youngsters — but the dancers in the trailer appear to be in their teens. Perhaps Sutton's character is responsible for their training, at least temporarily. I mean, we wouldn't want to compromise the artistic integrity of a Stars Hollow musical.

Although we still don't know exactly what brought Foster to Stars Hollow, here's another interesting tidbit — Stacey Oristano of Bunheads is also in the revival, but details about her role are basically nonexistent and we don't even know if she'll interact with Sutton's character. Three Bunheads cast members are now in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, so I have to wonder if there's there some sort of crossover that we're not being told about. I know it's a stretch, but this superfan of both series certainly hopes so. I mean, dreams do come true — the fact that Gilmore Girls is returning is proof of that.
